Trouble is Dan, he adopts a scatter gun approach which makes him seem incontinent in terms of having any sort of strategy.

But they haven't though, have they? They've delayed taking any recommended action until it's literally too late and the horse has bolted to every part of the country.

They didn't take it seriously enough to start with by which stage it had already taken a stranglehold on the country and all the way through it has been a deadly combination of delay, indecision, muddled messaging and lack of clear leadership.

You downplay the figures but look at excess deaths over the past 12 months. That's a hell of a lot of people dying for other reasons who just so happened to have Covid at some point in the last 28 days.

You mention transfer of wealth - just how many billions have we given again in contracts to those with links to the Tory party? At least they've lined their pockets from it.

Of course the economic damage is going to hurt for a good while. But I'd rather be poorer than be dead.

Still if we had stayed in the EU I wonder how many we would have vaccinated by now?

From watching PMQs over the months he hasn’t seemed come up with much worthwhile

State pension pay outs considerably less too.

Good point. Make a note of that Rishi. The spare money can go on the NHS and, what's left over, on The Border Force.

So while serious it is not much worse than a bad flu epedemic.

Certainly Johnson thought so, and it interfered with the tories brexit dream, they just thought it was foreign and unlikely here damaging the economy etc.

If it hadn't been for Macron threatening to shut the border altogether Johnson would have carried on ignoring the reality from Italy etc. and we would indeed now be looking at pandemic figures.

The Asian flu epedemic of 1957, completely ignored by MacMillans Tory government, was left to NHS doctors to manage and claimed over 80,000 lives.

The difference I fear is there is not a foreseeable end to this and we will have to accept fundamental changes in our lives.

But it is very much a case of work it out for yourself.

Governments are seriously damaging to your health.

Not just Tories either. 30,000 people died of Hong Kong flu in 1968.

To give credit where it's due the vaccination part seems to be the one area they seem to have not colossally f*cked up! Fingers crossed they can keep it up.

So we're not allowed to mention this on a football site but the EU and BLM etc are ok!

Also, what would Starmer have done better? Probably not have ignored five COBRA meetings at the start.

Boris Johnson the worst posiible PM at the worst possible time.

Have to completely agree with your last sentence. Hope everything ok with the expectant parents

From what I heard SAGE did not say to lock down the country at the start. Secondly we don't pay data modellers....who are wildly inaccurate by the way....to make decisions on national policy. Even if they practically have all the way through this.

Also your belief that this virus could have been stopped or reduced in the country when its practically been a similar result everywhere the population density is broadly aligned.....the only real difference being in how the figures are put together...like I was saying earlier.

Well, I won't deny that Johnson has treated this the way he treats everything, flip flopping as he goes. However, as I said, the reality is that SAGE is directing this and government are rubber stamping it.

A unknown percent of those deaths will be because of the reaction to this pandemic and not the virus itself....suicides and other ailments that weren't treated in time due to non diagnoses and delays.

We don't have an unbiased picture at the moment.

While I think criticism of contracts is valid where it's proven to be corrupt I think your last sentence shows just over the top your reaction to this virus has been.

You will continue to get into your car and will continue to take all the other risks associated in life but you won't think about the risk because there was no man on the telly scaring you.

Oh like that 'two week circuit breaker' that was never going to work anyway.

Yeah, really useful.

I don't know why people latch onto whatever the number is this week to make this point as if the current total is profoundly important or an end point. It was happening at 10,000 too on here if you go back and check. It's an arbitrary number on account of measures put in place (which people of course have different takes on) to keep the number down + vast portions of the population still haven't contracted the virus (but are susceptible to it). 50,000 died in the last two months. That might be a more noteworthy statistic with regard and highlight the unique problems this virus brings. With a 'let it ride' approach we'd have been looking at far higher numbers. If people feel that's a fair compromise then fair play, but it comes with accepting that reality.

What I will say is that I don't think they've ever really got the business - health balance right (clearly its unsustainable for certain businesses to be closed this long), but outside of the vaccine rollout, just about everything up been a botch job from the beginning so that shouldn't surprise us.
