Enough is enough. Who exactly are we protecting now?

The Indian variant is more infectious apparently however the main symptoms are a headache, runny nose and a sore throat and Drs are saying that breathing difficulties are not a primary issue now. Sounds like a virus to me that is weakening as it mutates, in fact the symptoms now sound more like a nasty common cold.

There are hardly any cases in intensive care at present and out of the blue pneumonia has raised its ugly head again and is more of a killer than Covid. Now there is a surprise that all of a sudden it is back. Could it be perhaps that the same level of pneumonia has been about since the start of Covid but deaths got counted elsewhere? Not doubting Covid was a killer, but just saying.

Now the government tell us they are planning for future lockdowns this Autumn. They are truly bonkers. The emergency powers they used to lock us all down run out in September I think, so it looks like they are searching for excuses to push through an extension on that.

I’m no conspiracy theorist but it does make you wonder what the true agenda is.

You are confused

The initial signs and symptoms appear to be different with the Delta variant compared to alpha. But it isn’t weaker. You are twice as likely to be hospitalised with the Delta variant

Serious question this time last year what were your thoughts about Cummins? Did you believe every word he said?

I'm not confused at all, you can only go by the information you have read. I can accept the medical contention that it may be more dangerous even though this stance flies in the face of the standard life cycle of a virus, which normally weakens as the number of available hosts reduce.

I have read the study although I am not wholly sure what its outcome really is. It fails to be specific about deaths or total numbers of people in hospital who are fully vaccinated compared with those who are not. It makes a lot of assumptions which I guess is what modelling is all about however the real measure the public are interested in is total hospitalisations and deaths from Covid compared with total hospitalisations and deaths from other illnesses and how this has impacted 5 year or 10 year averages as a yardstick.

Surely we are now at a stage where Covid deaths are just another risk in our lives, or do people still think we should we continue to lock down the country and head inexorably towards further financial ruin.

Zero Covid is an unachievable expectation, so managing it whilst returning to normal is the only way to go. As a comparison you can't manage say pneumonia, so that is an understood and accepted illness, however we do not have a national policy for protection from it. Covid is another illness to be added to the list.

So I go back to my original point of now that we are vaccinated, who are we protecting. It would appear that for those unfortunately on deaths door they are still likely to die from Covid if they catch it, jabbed or not, so there is no real protection for this very small sector (although given their general health, they are quite likely to die within a certain time period anyway).

The rest of the population who are healthy and vaccinated or young and unvaccinated must be who the national decisions should be made for. So as a concerned member of the public, the interesting stats I really want to see are:

1) What are the chances of being hospitalised from Covid per 100,000 of the population for vaccinated and the same for unvaccinated in the following age groups:

0-20
21-40
41-60
60-70
70 and above.

2) What are the chances of death from Covid per 100,000 of the population for vaccinated and unvaccinated, same age groups as above.

These stats would make it very easy to formulate in your own mind what the current level of danger really is and might also allow those who haven't had the jab to weigh up the risks either way of having it.

Do you think we should still be locked down? What do you think is the way out of it?

Personally, I think enough is enough.

I stand slightly corrected - their study shows 105,00 case approx - the main stat is 167,000 apparently - my mistake.
That being the case with only just over 1,000 in hospital it surely proves that it is not having the virus same effect?
Time to set us free and have a covid passport as well!

As in his little trip? Half of it

Same as I’ll believe at least half of what he’s written about. Even 5% of that being true is damaging enough.

Also recency bias is should not be the only measurement in this case. Just because he might have been lying more 12 months ago, doesn’t mean he’s lying the same this time. Further, there’s not much in that write up that comes across as fanciful. Especially when you throw in visual evidence.

To quote one Tory backbencher, Boris et al are now out of lives. I also am reasonably reliably informed that this really is it. No more delays. The only way the 19th doesn’t happen is if things get wildly out of control. Which, on balance so far, looks unlikely.

Also, furlough is ending and businesses are getting screwed by having to repay loans without beating able to trade, so I find any further extension incredibly unlikely without something epic happening.

However might be tempted to amend the terms of the ‘great unlocking’ so he can claim to say it’s all back to normal whilst really having a couple of key things still in place, eg masks. We shall see

The Lib Dems winning the by-election in Chesham might make him focus a bit more and realise that so many people do not support his totalitarian policies.
