A non sequitur indeed, yet you understand its point.

No I didn't, I researched it and I regard 300 quid as overly expensive for a very warm winter coat that isn't waterproof.

I spent less on something that can do both jobs.

WE dishonest? Yeah why believe me when you could just believe that he's a 'one nation conservative' that just happens to magically be defended by Hol's leftist demographic.

My thanks to Maple for trying to get you to see your errors. Whether he has succeeded is another matter. I have often tried, on this and many others, but brick walls show more movement.

It's well off the subject, but you frequently refer to me being a "one nation conservative", when discussing a completely unrelated subject, as if that is some kind of indication of my reliability. Just as you seem to believe that me retiring in Cornwall has impaired my ability to think, it's not only irrelevant to the discussion, it's also one of your frequent ad hominems.

I have described myself, totally accurately, as a "one nation conservative", as an admirer of the likes of Macmillan, Heseltine and Ken Clarke. If you need more to be able to understand, the type of conservatives I admire are on the opposite wing to those like Powell and Thatcher. When the Party was controlled by the centre right, I was a supporter, when by the hard right, I was not. I am, and always have been, a firm believer in the need to stand on, and hold, the centre, to be able to make progress.

If the term has evolved, as they can, to mean something else, then I renounce it. Johnson is now using it to describe himself, and his politics are an anathema to everything I believe in, and to my understanding of the term.

Omicron variant may have picked up a piece of common-cold (or HIV) virus - [Link]

The Omicron variant of the virus that causes COVID-19 likely acquired at least one of its mutations by picking up a snippet of genetic material from another virus - possibly one that causes the common cold - present in the same infected cells, according to researchers.

This genetic sequence does not appear in any earlier versions of the coronavirus, called SARS-CoV-2, but is ubiquitous in many other viruses including those that cause the common cold, and also in the human genome, researchers said.

Cells in the lungs and in the gastrointestinal system can harbor SARS-CoV-2 and common-cold coronaviruses simultaneously, according to earlier studies. Such co-infection sets the scene for viral recombination, a process in which two different viruses in the same host cell interact while making copies of themselves, generating new copies that have some genetic material from both "parents."

The same genetic sequence appears many times in one of the coronaviruses that causes colds in people - known as HCoV-229E - and in the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS, Soundararajan said.

South Africa, where Omicron was first identified, has the world's highest rate of HIV, which weakens the immune system and increases a person's vulnerability to infections with common-cold viruses and other pathogens.

More research is needed to confirm the origins of Omicron's mutations and their effects on function and transmissibility. There are competing hypotheses that the latest variant might have spent some time evolving in an animal host.

In the meantime, Soundararajan said, the new findings underscore the importance of people getting the currently available COVID-19 vaccines.

"You have to vaccinate to reduce the odds that other people, who are immunocompromised, will encounter the SARS-CoV-2 virus," Soundararajan said.

Picking up a piece of one gene is clearly a world away from picking up an entirely different virus - but a noteworthy observation in terms of the current situation

The most important parts of that are the final two sentences.

I know.

If he's a conservative I'm Leon Trotsky.

He's a lying fraud.

I can't remember any political or social discussion on here where he's significantly differed from the far left......which is why they defend him....I couldn't see the Tories he described supporting knee bending for example. The only right wing ideas he supports are the ones that protect his bank account....that's no different to a champagne socialist.

The Conservative who detests the Tory party because it's too right wing???

All those conservatives he says he supported were in parties that were significantly more right wing than this one and supported and worked for leaders more right wing than Johnson.

Rearrange the following words, a little difficult I know but you can also ask someone for help:

black kettle the calling pot

You should be able to manage it in under an hour.

Well, the word black might cause him a serious dilemma.

The far left on here of course immediately spring to the defence of the "one nation conservative". Mind you, I expect his one nation is Cuba.

I am glad you think it's funny.

That doesn't change the fact that it's true. Or at least was by the definition at the time I made it. Not if it applies to the approach of the current government.

I have always been a socially responsible conservative. Someone who understands the need to encourage and support enterprise alongside the need to protect and support the vulnerable.

I detest far left politics with exactly the same passion I detest far right politics.

That some on the far right see anyone even slightly more balanced in their approach than them, as a "lefty" is their mistake. Not mine.

Here we go again! More personal attacks rather than reasoned argument.

Just because someone adopts an extreme right approach to their politics doesn't mean that someone else is sympathetic to the far left. I detest the far-left. I have little time for the state ownership of assets, unless it is unavoidable. The only thing that I approved of with Thatcher was her emancipating the power of the Unions, who were previously so disruptive. I thought Corbyn and his cronies were a disaster, and the primary reason we ended up with Johnson.

I believe in the power of enterprise to create jobs and wealth. The idea that my politics is based on self-interest is a gross distortion and a very big insult. It just isn't. I believe in it for the future for my wife, my children, grand-children and my country. My life is in the last phase now. I have enough for myself, as my needs are modest, and I have conserved, like the true conservative I am, my assets. All of which I have created myself via a successful business career and two businesses of my own. That I possess some social responsibility does not make me a socialist. It makes me a responsible person. Not a "lefty".

I don't detest the Tory Party. I detest what it has become and the phase it is going through. I hope, and expect, that in the fullness of time the wheel will turn again, they will regain some balance and return to a better, more inclusive political direction. Johnson isn't so much right wing as no wing at all. He doesn't have a set of principles. He is at heart a populist, saying what the people want to hear, rather than leading them to where they need to be.

I am grateful for any support I get here, but as I don't ever see any far-left supporters posting here, your idea that some support me makes no sense. That some are a little further to the brighter side, than the dark side, is pleasing, for the dark side dominates.
