Remarkedly, given it's source, it isn't.

It obviously depends on the availability of an effective vaccine. If that takes 18 months then that's how long the vulnerable and elderly will have to remain protected.

What people of my age group are now experiencing is the new normal, until this beast is defeated. For others the brakes will be gradually released but life won't be back to the old normal until everyone has been vaccinated or a reliable drug treatment has been found. Football, and all other sports, behind closed doors is going to be our best hope of entertainment for the coming months.

‘ BRITONS aged 70 and over could be required to remain in coronavirus lockdown until autumn of 2021 according to a senior Conservative.’

‘Could be required’, and therefore not forced. You’ll take your chances if you decide to, or have to go out to get food yourself if the grocers won’t prioritise you and it’s every man for himself and the supermarkets scrap for every penny instead of the elderly lady who spends far less. Many others helping now will be back at work full time.

Bowls and other activities will be cancelled. Air travel and cruises not allowed.

Who will be our manager? Roy won’t be.

Not to be overly pessimistic but what happens if no vaccine is effective? People can’t be expected to stay indoors forever.

Then it’ll be natural population control (caused by some Chinese eating dirty diseased animals). It would solve a lot of global problems now and on the way. High birth rates in some cultures will continue but from a lower number.

This virus doesn't touch youth in any significant numbers.

Herd immunity solved the Spanish flu and that would be the same in the case of no vaccine.

I expect in today’s world a vaccine will be created. It just depends on when and how long after life is now going to go back to normal very soon, even if it is staggered and slowly.

I'd be amszed if it wasn't.

My guess is that depends on whether getting the virus protects us from getting it again. From what I have read that is as yet uncertain and also depends on the level of exposure, or the "viral load" you face.

If we can get it again then so called "herd immunity" becomes somewhat irrelevant because we won't be immune. We might be somewhat immune, so unlikely to suffer to the same degree, but still capable of spreading it.

So without a vaccine things will get very difficult indeed. There is the hope that anti-virals will be found that ameliorate the symptoms.

I suppose people will have to decide for themselves what level of risk they are prepared to accept. Social distancing and masks when in public would be the new normal and the very vulnerable encouraged to remain isolated.

He heard it on sky news preview. I think it’s in tomorrow’s Telegraph.
