Some holidays will have been paid for before the virus and if they’re still on, I don’t think you get a refund. Some will go.

Most of us still have another couple of months in which to decide. I will only get a refund from the airline if they cancel the flight not if I choose not to go

Yes agreed. But it was against freedom of movement. Same people later complain Boris didn’t act soon enough on other things, but banning all travel apart from repatriation would cut the virus at source. Instead you had part lockdown with infected people coming in.

I have a holiday booked for Costa Rica in August I am supposed to pay the balance next month. Unless there is a radical change I am not going so I guess it will then be down to the current government advice as to whether I get a refund.

Take advice and make sure you're not in default if you don't pay, and then pay by credit card.

Only 10% of infected Italians have built up antibodies.

This contact tracing app and the thousands of people recruited to implement the contacting people is only going to have a limited benefit because there will be loads of people who don’t isolate with no symptoms or mild symptoms as people gradually realise the panic and concern that our NHS would crumble has long gone. It’ll mean 2 weeks off work, sometimes self employed, or education. We’re not a very obedient and cooperative bunch like the South Koreans.

I was originally all for the app but I’m beginning to see this app as a data gathering tool now this virus is evaporating in London and a new mutation or seasonal return is the likely risk rather than a 2nd peak.

Conundrum

I’m not sure that you can have a seasonal return ie this winter, without a vaccine, that doesn’t result in a second peak

All that said - the world and his wife seem to have gone ‘ah f*** it, it’s summer now’

Which is fine, and I’m all for protecting civil liberties, but there’s a high chance this attitude leads back to where we started. So for sure, go for it. Their choice - illness and insolvency.

I’m still respecting the rules - until we get to the end of June and this little ‘relaxation’ (read everything’s back to normal for most people) has not led to the 3 week lag starting to produce new and increasing cases

Did you know? 98.0000001% of people are morons.

It'll be modelled.

What do you mean? (politely)

It’s still the same adults at the end of it.

The app will assume not everyone who should isolate for whatever reason, will - what it needs is lots of data to model.

This would be very concerning if true, but it doesn't appear to tally with more recent information out there. In New York City for instance 21% tested positive for coronavirus antibodies. That would be impossible if only 10% of people built up antibodies in the first place.

and there's this recent study "In their study of blood drawn from 285 people hospitalized with severe COVID-19, researchers in China, led by Ai-Long Huang, Chongqing Medical University, found that all had developed SARS-CoV-2 specific antibodies within two to three weeks of their first symptoms." [Link]

That said I've read elsewhere that not everybody developed antibodies. So many unknowns. We had better hope most of the significant numbers of those who struggled but pulled through have antibodies, else they're f***ed too.

In Senegal, they closed the borders as soon as the international warning was signalled. They made beds instantly available for anyone with symptoms, and began a comprehensive tracing process, and is now developing a $1 test for every citizen. They've had 30 deaths.

It really is quite staggering how sh*t we've done. I mean, we are the country where the double helix was discovered, where the apple fell on Newton's head, where Steven Hawking outlined the existence of black holes, and we are being out-deathed by Senegal 1000-1.

If punk ever happened I'd be preaching the law, instead of listenin to Lydon lecture BBC4

Impressive. You have to commend countries that got on top of covid-19 fast, as it makes it so much easier to keep on top of when combined which measures such as universal mask wearing.

I do think places like New Zealand though are still in a tough spot. Where a population is largely covid free there are questions about how on earth you make tourism work. At least locally they can operate their economy without issue though. Maybe they're holding out for better treatments or a vaccine before opening up. There are pluses and minuses with any approach of course.
