The long game of this is going to be interesting for Bojo and Co as they've spent a lot of political capital on defending DC. Even if Boris had considered giving him the boot, it's important to remember that Cumming's wife is commissioning editor of the Spectator magazine. Politics is a dirty game and I can't imagine that Cummings, along with most people in power positions, don't have ways of leveraging their position if they need to. Dropping him would've come at a cost for Boris, so he instead elected to weather the storm.

If science says that to make excuses for rule-breakers will result in increased deaths and the government says it relies on it's scientific advisers then the fallout is going to be catastrophic if it ignores that advice. The point is a lot of people pointing fingers at others for being so easily swayed by one man’s actions. Catastrophic? In that case sacking him isn’t enough. He should be charged with genocide.

I've seen quite a few of these types of polls during lockdown. There was one last week asking parents if they were concerned about their children's mental health during lock down. Unsuprisingly, out of the people that bothered to respond, it came back saying the majority of parents were concerned. People that couldn't care less if he got sacked or not didn't bother responding. Only people that read this news article on Sky's website did. All these polls really do is give the website owners some kind on indication of how many people are interacting with their websites, so they have data they can use to push up the price of advertising.

what irks me more than having his Abs pinched by his buddy, was his obnoxious stance on Brexit and the Ulster Border. Merkel's puppet has to go. I saw that too. Maybe it's 50/50 who knows. Polls aren't perfect but I get your gist, as HOL much like BBS isn't a microcosm of national feeling. It's something that's open to interpretation. On one hand you could posit that he genuinely did have childcare concerns more so than most, was doing the best for his family in a difficult situation, and didn't have contact with any other people; even his parents according to him. Besides when people are ill they may panic or make decisions they otherwise shouldn't have and that the letter of any rule or law is secondary to them. It's not like he did all this for a laugh, and for most part he was still isolating if what he says is true. The media scrum didn't adhere to social distancing when they hounded him, and the hostage video style interview will have come across as distasteful to many. The other take would be that being caught out then suddenly commenting on nuance and "what I thought was best" completely flies in the face of government diktak that came down from him to begin with. That his get out clause is maddening and painfully inconsiderate to those who didn't even get to say goodbye to dying loved ones in hospital, or go to their funeral, partially on account of his say-so. Moments they will never get back. That he wasn't particularly ill compared to many and that the messaging making this about the welfare of his disabled child is a strategically and selectively "woke" way to shame and shut down anyone who questions his actions. At the end of the day I can't see anyone on either side changing their mind about this now. It's caused Cummings some damage but he was already seen as a maverick who doesn't play by the rules anyway, so I think it'll blow over unless anything new comes out.

This is true of many polls, but it's a Yougov poll and they at least attempt to get a cross section of society on their books. Those that took part will have been sent this poll or called as matter of routine and paid a small amount to complete it. Not as though I'm saying it's accurate, just that it's less self selecting than most. In general I agree though, well organised polls can sometimes be off, and the kind of strawpolls you get in most newspapers or on social media are almost entirely worthless.

This will not change your behaviour and mine either. We actually agree funnily on the lockdown measures. Why on earth do people see a possible faux par as a reason to put themselves in a dangerous situation? Surely it must be more grown up to act on your own instincts than to be lead by others. Are people really lemmings in a human skin.
