It’s probably more the Karen’s hoping on a vaccine and flipping out about it. That’s their right and nature, or so they believe.

It’s just brilliant when you ask intelligent people on when on a vaccine they go blank. Nothing.

'I commented on hope for a vaccine for the elderly and why I can appreciate them holding out for one and how they potentially have their place in getting some through this.' A vaccine would likely not make a meaningful difference to other groups, but yes people can feel how they want about it. Unless your point is that we stop working on a vaccine because it gives false hope to people it's of no use to anyway, then its another drifting non point.

Again, it's a real positive that vaccines are being worked on and if studies goes well and it rolls out to those in most need I'm happy for them. I'm sorry if you're so in panic mode at such a mundane point but that's for you.

Odd assumption.

Look, elderly I’ve spoken to do not want damage to the country or people to change way of life or curb their way of life so they can feel slightly more ‘safe’ when they go to buy their food essentials. Of course a vaccine is beneficial to them and will be them first, but any ice spoken to do not want destruction or fear everywhere and for everyone. That is as usual people taking that stance for them. Unless they’re acting because they don’t want to come across as bitter or whatever.

And I can’t believe I’m arguing over something with such a low mortality rate on a Saturday night so hopefully that’s it.

I don't recall ever saying that elderly did want to damage the country. Clearly significant amounts of them have adjusted their way of life, which is indeed a reason why a vaccine would make a difference to them. We get the cartoonish consensus 'elderly I've spoken to' again of course.

Well, as one of the 'elderly', taking sensible precautions without totally destroying any sort of life, there's no way I would even consider having any vaccine that hasn't been clinically tested for at least 2 years....... I come from the generation that remembers only too well the insufficiently tested 'wonder drug' that was thalidomide!

Yes, as stated, we all have our own take and assess our own risks. For people of no great age it's definitely not something I'd make a beeline for either. For those most at risk, based on study results they may come to the conclusion that the risk of not having it comes at more of a cost than going ahead. It should be a personal decision though and I can well understand why you'd decide against.

If one or two people here end up in a bad way with covid-19, plenty of the relentless denier stuff that's been posted will look pretty shameful. Oh well, each to their own. I'll stick to posting links that I feel balance out the severe slant and conspiracy stuff.

(US) Pfizer may seek US green light to use COVID vaccine in late Nov [Link]

"Pfizer Inc said on Friday it may file for United States authorisation of the COVID-19 vaccine it is developing with German partner BioNTech in late November, making it unlikely a vaccine will be available before the US election as President Donald Trump has promised.

Pfizer said that it may say if the vaccine is effective as soon as this month based on its 40,000-person clinical trial but that it also needs safety data that will not be available until November at the earliest.

The Pfizer news, published in a letter from its chief executive on its website, lifted the US stock market and the company’s shares. Shares were up slightly in rival vaccine maker Moderna Inc, which is close to Pfizer in its vaccine development.

“So let me be clear, assuming positive data, Pfizer will apply for Emergency Authorization Use in the US soon after the safety milestone is achieved in the third week of November,” Pfizer Chief Executive Albert Bourla said."

And she stopped paying long ago.

What does arithmetic have to do with anything? And why make a snide comment anyway? What's your problem?

Also, why does it matter that she stopped paying long ago? Unless you are of the opinion that she is no longer entitled to use the NHS, in which case, not only are you wrong, but morally bankrupt to boot.

Slovakia to test whole country for coronavirus - [Link]

"Slovak Prime Minister Igor Matovic said Saturday the eurozone member will test every resident ages 10 and up for the coronavirus, amid an uptick in infections.

"Testing will be free of charge," he told reporters in the country of 5.4 million people, without specifying whether it will be mandatory or voluntary.

"If we manage to pull this off, we can set an example for the entire world."

A pilot run in certain areas is scheduled for next weekend, while the main testing will take place in late October and early November.

The government declared a state of emergency earlier this month in response to a surge in infections and deaths. It also introduced new restrictions this week."

Interesting approach

One arrested in threat to kidnap and kill Wichita mayor over COVID-19 mask mandate - [Link]

"A Wichita man has been arrested on suspicion of threatening to kidnap and kill Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple over frustrations with the city’s mask ordinance, the mayor and police said Friday afternoon.

Meredith Dowty, 59, was booked into Sedgwick County Jail at 6:05 p.m., Friday, booking reports show. Police confirmed he is the suspect and said he could face a charge of criminal threat.

Whipple said he had been read a series of text messages received by another city official that asked about Whipple’s address and contained a detailed threat against his life.

The apparent motive was the suspect’s opposition to “masks and tyranny,” Whipple said.

“He said he was going to kidnap me and slash my throat and he needed my address because I needed to see the hangman — me and everyone who, something about tyranny,” Whipple said.

“It sounded like the person was very upset about pretty much mask mandates and he said something about not being able to see his mother because of COVID restrictions on elderly homes.”

A calm contributor

It appears she is content to take significant risks. But if she then becomes ill her folly will fall upon the rest of us. It will be us that have to pay for her care. The idea that she has paid in advance for it is risible and demonstrates a lack of ability to do simple counting.

If she became badly ill the cost is huge as is the opportunity cost of looking after others who couldn't help getting ill. And what is more, she is no longer paying into the system and will have stopped when she was 60.

If you want to gamble use your own resources, not those of others.
