It’s quite clearly a demand issue! The supply side is fine (other than perhaps in some cases where demand is outstripping the pace of production). Consumers buying up and hoarding everything in sight is causing the problem.

It really is economics 101

Groan....Really Dan....you should be doing better.

I'm inclined to agree with this summary. Massively increased footfall in supermarkets and stripping the shelves is the problem. Can't see what there is to argue with.

Well he argued.

So how are you going to deal with the demand problem without increasing the supply?

Supply needs to increase until normal behaviour resumes....and that's what is happening.

With all of this isolation going on, there's going to be a massive baby boom in a few months, as well as divorce.

I'm not a betting man, but if I was I'd wager that there'll be thousands of kids called Corona running around in five years.

Thought about that earlier. We are going to have a few months of the NHS being overloaded with Covid19 then it being overloaded with pregnancy.

the village pub had its last night (for a few weeks), yesterday.
Pub was packed. So being f-cking stoopid is more contagious than a virus.

Then,..a carpenter comes round to my house this morning to do a quote, and tells me about how he was in the pub and getting pizza last night,...then won't shake my hand in case he catches something.

Went to out local butchers this morning, and it was something like Jones the butcher from Dad's army. All the counter trays were empty, apart from 3 sausages and a couple of bacon rashers.
My missus asks "so no beef then ?"
Butcher goes out the back and returns with something in a brown paper bag, and whispers "i've got a couple of chickens left for regulars. Do you want this one ?"
So at least we've got a roast this weekend

You impose limits on what people can buy and discourage people loading up with two week's worth when ordinarily they'd be shopping for a couple of days. The demand is entirely artificial and fuelled by illogical thought.

That's sensible and that's already being done and it will help a bit but it's easy to work around it and doesn't work better than increasing supply...which is what they are doing.

Any fool can just send in their relation....make more trips....go to a different cashier or automated machine.

People need to see full shelves again to calm the hell down....and only extra supply is going to do that.

Mob mentality. People being reactionary and behaving like sheep

Even at its peak, Supermarket Sweep was nowhere near as entertaining as watching shoppers now.

Yeah, though you feel for the vulnerable out there who are genuinely going short because of panic buyers.

I am interested to hear what steps your employers have taken during this crisis.

Mine has always provided the capability to work from home. Recently a check was made by our I.T. guy that everybody had fully functioning kit located in the best possible environment. Being a small company of <20 employees this wasn't too onerous.

The decision to close the office and work from home until further notice was made last Tuesday.

Contrast that with my partners employers, a CHINESE bank in the City.

No working from home capability
Most of the Chinese staff have bailed out with even the slightest hint of a cough, leaving local staff to run the back office
Senior Chinese boss insisting that some of those off sick return to the office ( against the banks stated policy )
Senior Chinese boss displaying all the symptoms of having the virus but continuing to work
No meaningful attempt to make the working environment safer via distancing

And the icing on the cake - the remaining Chinese women in the office, including that senior manager, have been observed still not washing their hands after using the toilet ( they never do ) despite what's going on.

This is no surprising. Unfortunately `empathy` world does not exist in eastern geography especially where hierarchy is still dominating culture / governance etc.

I hope after this mayhem ends, world will realize that system which exploits people by being fed by this pathetic culture is not sustainable (cheap labour & low life quality).

This is the same pathetic mindset who hid the epidemic and spread out to the world.

It was amusing on Thursday that although Tescos had not a single bottle of cow's milk, the shelf with the cartons had lots and lots of 'oat' milk, 'soy' milk and 'almond' milk being looked at by the desperate hoards, who then shook their heads and walked on by.

Obviously not desperate enough yet to put that in their tea

I saw that with some multi coloured pasta at £1.29p
Some tart on the phone asking if her mate wanted to pay that much against the basics which had all ran out.
Ooh that's dear I dont want to pay that.
Clearly not in need then just being a greedy t***.
