That's obviously true and has always been true. The problem is not if to release the brakes but when that tipping point is approaching and how fast we allow the balance to shift the other way, without it throwing us all under the bus.

Too many pseudo-experts here seem to think they know the answers to these questions better than those whose life work it is to study them.

The vaccination programme and the emerging treatments seem likely to accelerate the move to that tipping point, whilst the emergence of new variants and their unknown response to them will push back. As a result, I think the current cautiousness will remain for a good while yet. It will be a "steady as we go" approach.

I suspect we will see the schools re-opening as a first step, followed by a pause to monitor the impact, then if all is OK the re-opening of retail and as the better weather arrives more outdoor activity. Hospitality will be the last to be relaxed I think. The aim this year must be to avoid another winter lockdown like this in 9 months time.

Unrestricted foreign travel won't happen until the whole world has been vaccinated and that could be several years away. So it's likely that holidays will be at home this year and only to approved destinations after that for a while.

So those who are advocating an immediate end to the lockdown now that the most vulnerable have been vaccinated are probably going to be disappointed and will be wailing and gnashing their teeth about how useless the government are for many more months.

I disagree - the point when people will refuse to comply with lockdown is fast approaching, you can see this with the number of people out and about and the cars on the road. The CRG have outlined to HMG that all restrictions are to be lifted by end of April.

Only those people immune to the horrendous damage this lockdown is inflicting on our society can talk about “wailing and knashing of teeth” with no understanding or empathy for what this is doing to mental health, businesses folding, huge numbers of unemployed and lets not forget a years lost education for children.

This lockdown must end soon and NEVER be repeated.

Greece might open up to anybody unvaccinated. Some countries cannot function without tourism.

As we’re coming into summer cases should drop naturally anyway - personally I think aiming for May to wind back most restrictions sounds reasonable. I reckon July is being rumoured (we’ll find out Monday) so the govt have some wriggle room.

But to say no more lockdowns, irrespective of case count? That’s being unrealistic

People understandably point to the nightmare outcomes of extended lockdowns but ultimately if you simply stand by and let the case count go up exponentially you’ll get the same result anyway. Makes no sense to me

What you can viably argue is how long they should last, how long it should take to wind back each level of restrictions. That I can get on board with. But ultimately we’ve hardly been that cautious as a nation compared with some other more draconian countries and ironically that may have resulted in more measures for longer than would otherwise have been necessary.

Also, he’s right, as I’ve said before, in my unqualified opinion due to the fact each countries vaccination programme is moving at wildly different speeds this continues on and off for at least the next 3 years. Perhaps not lockdowns, but certainly intermittent distancing and so on. Mutations will see to that.

True, but just like Brexit maybe they should use this as an opportunity to wean themselves off it a bit

It is even stranger that Dr Mort made that statement now I know he has a relevant PhD but hey, I’m a hypocrite in some fashion for pointing it out.

Seems unlikely. Will either be someone who has passed a PCR test at minimum.

‘Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Haris Theoharis said he was hoping for a “semi-normal summer” this year.

He suggested that a ‘vaccine passport’ scheme could facilitate travel between Britain and Greece.

“Discussions are under way to see if it will be feasible,” he said, adding that he was “very hopeful that we can reach a solution”.

“We don’t want to limit travel to those who have been vaccinated of course, but since we are mandating that before travelling someone has to have a negative test result, this is a waste of resources if people are vaccinated, to be tested every time they travel, the need for this testing could be limited by the vaccination certificate,” he said.’

I don’t think countries are just going to be letting anyone in regardless of test or vaccine, or both

It does make you wonder if all strategies ultimately lead to a similar place. There's talk of a lockdown in Sweden now [Link]

Unvaccinated with a negative text is unvaccinated. They won’t turn away loads of people unvaccinated. Not a chance.
