A lot of people just get attracted to the name, colours, a player from their area/nation, certain giant killing matches and also through other friends. Maybe the kit looks good... loadsa random reasons. Also the clubs pre season tours.

have to admit, that was me ultimately!

I grew up near bournemouth in the 80s/90s. Southampton was the only Top team anywhere near me, and I felt no real connection with them. Portsmouth weren't a known force and Bournemouth were a team my fellow school friends could get into! My dad was a Notts Forest fan which was way too far away.....

So casually went looking for a club to follow/support. Then I saw a poster following Palaces victory in The ZDS cup...been supporting Palace ever since. Crazy that that was nearly 30 years ago.

My Dad took me in the early 60s. Can recall Johnny Byrne, Eddie Werge, Roy Summersby and a guy call Uphill whose shots invariably reflected his name.
Always seemed to have good goalies in those days. Vic Rouse and Tony Millington in reserve - a Welsh international no less.

Sorry for the ramble.

Bloomin' cheek! Denigrating my Hero Dennis Uphill. But you were right, couldn't hit side of a buss from 5 yards but he was a trier. What couldn't we do with a Johnny Byrne in our midfield now ......

My Dad has a lot to answer for. I suspect in 40 years times my two lads will be of similar thinking!

I hear a lot about family ties which are always relevant but in this age of global accessibility and marketing of the Premier League brand, coupled with a huge informal internet streaming community, not to mention the diverse array of digitised football games, I think we can look forward to a growing number of international supporters. I was touched by a recent story of the guy from Japan who visited his beloved Stockport County in their match against Bromley.

"I like video games and I found Stockport County and I chose [to support] Stockport County," Aoki, who found the club playing Fifa, told BBC Radio Manchester.

Whenever I arrive for a match at Selhurst and see folk piling off the trains I often wonder where everyone has come from.

I live just a few miles north of Brighton in a village of about 2,000 people, and there are seven Palace fans that I know of living there (there may be others). And they are all season ticket holding regulars. One thing we have in common, apart from being Palace, is that we all originally grew up in and around the Croydon, Sutton, Bromley area, hence our affinity with the club.

I've lived in Crete since 2012 and I have met in that time at least four Palace fans. One of my best mates here is a lone Wolves fan so as we watch every Palace and Wolves match in the bar we give each other moral support - given we are not playing each other!

Mind you I was raised and educated in Beckenham so pinching a line from Blackadder I have "Palace tattooed on the back of my neck". Even my folks saw the Crystal Palace burn down. Yeah I'm a bit old!

Always remembering walking from the Holmesdale to the Whitehorse end at half time!

I was in conversation with a chap who is involved with Hassocks FC and he is a supporter of our club.We might have discussed where he originated from but I have no recollection of the conversation.
I am led to believe quite a few supporters reside in nearby Burgess Hill.

I grew up in Purley and started supporting Palace aged 8 in 1951. Served in the navy so watched Palace whenever I was back in Blighty. Still the case as I live in Canada and watch on our annual UK visits. Great thing about living here is we get ALL premiership games live and have done for years.
I laughed about the Denis Uphill reference as it is such a Palace story. Watford had a great strike pair, Cliff Holton and Uphill. Palace struggled to replace Johny Byrne so signed high scoring Uphill. But he was the wrong half of the partnership and without Holton was useless. Later Palace signed Holton and he was an awesome striker, particularly when partnered with Peter Burridge, signed from Millwall.

this is like vintage nostalgia talk now, people leave London for the surrounding counties, I'm Streatham originally but moved down the A21 to Hastings and there are eagles strewn all along the route, same with brighton (A23) and Eastbourne (A22)
