The first season that subs were allowed you had to be injured to be replaced. No subs in cup games that season. It was right that Keith Smith was our first one used. The first one named v Birmingham.City on Saturday August 21 1965 was DavId Payne.

David Payne is largely forgotten, or at least ignored, but he was a great servant to the club.

Cliff Jackson was our first goalscoring substitute when he came on for Len Tomkins at Ipswich on.March 30 1968. He scored a last minute goal to give Palace a 2-2 draw.

Thanks gents, looks like it’s Cliff Jackson then. I’m an old’un myself and we’ll remember all the aforementioned players, in fact remember Keith Smith once scored after just 6 seconds.

Well done, Willo, to your friend who's "ripe in years".

I shall contact the chap tomorrow and relay this information. He will be tickled pink.

He has a vague recollection of Jackson scoring from the bench at Ipswich (He was at the match) but didn't know for certain if this was our first scorer as a substitute. All rather hazy after all these years!
Indeed the charming gentleman is "Ripe in years" - 75 this year !!

But it still surprises me that almost three seasons passed after subs were allowed before a Palace sub managed it.

Then again I wonder in the last three years how many of our subs have come on and scored. And that's potentially with three of them.

Perhaps Roy was our manager

I think it largely depends on your age as to whether you remember David Payne. Actually I find it very hard to forget him as I see him at most home matches.

he played as either No.8 or 10 in the 5-0 v Man U - I think Charlie Cooke was 8 and Payne was 10 but it cud be vice versa - anybody know who played what number?

Excellent 'Link'.

I think that Cooke generally played No 10 but this a long time ago and the years dim the memory !
No squad numbers in those days so a player could play with a different number on his back over the season.
Jackson was always No 1 !!!!!!!!!

I do recall that Frank O'Farrell was removed of his duties a few days after the 5-0 rout and was replaced by Tommy Docherty.

I recall David Payne with affection.Local lad who played over 300 games for us.Another player who left us for Orient.

I had an autograph book with coloured pages & remember David Payne signing for me one day. Think I got pretty much everyone over a couple of seasons - the players had a bit more time for that sort of thing back then!

I get the impression that in this modern era 'Selfos' have overtaken autographs with players far more likely to be photographed with supporters than asked to put pen to paper.Maybe my impression is mis-guided.
