A question which has made me wonder?

If you have a problem at work and you have to call in the union to fight your corner, does it harm your career progression?

Unfortunately a few years back I was victimised at work and had no option but to call in the union after 3 years of daily hell, I was wondering if I go for a promotion will management hold that against me? as they had to completely change the team and read the riot act out to a few of the bullies who made life he'll for me.

Well it sounds like they agreed with you if they had to move people around so I would say not a problem.I had no problem if someone reported bullying or discrimination that can happen at any level and is unacceptable.

The promotion would that be to a management level it's not clear from your post?

I do not like management that still behave like they are shop floor stewards in which case go and do that job with the equivalent pay.

If you are management you take the King's Shilling with all that goes with it in practice that means sometimes taking unpopular decisions and taking responsibility for them.

Anyway I would say go for it even if you do not get the answer you like, in which case you should consider changing jobs.

They will be looking for someone who has already shown responsibility and initiative. I would go for it you never know, besides if they give it to an idiot over you I think you have your answer.

Fingers crossed.

Generally managers are pragmatic. If you are the best person for the job you will probably get it. Mind you few people are good interviewers. So prepare carefully and try to lead their questions a bit so you get in your best points. But always listen carefully and answer the exam questions

Also there are many excellent candidates that don't interview well either.

I always used to be a bundle of nerves so I forgot what I wanted to say and tended to waffle and in the car driving home afterwards used to replay the perfect interview in my head with the answers that I forgot to give
