I'd agree that the BBC is an institution, however I don't think it deserves the trust nor protections it has benefited from. Charles married Diana as a Royal breeding machine and that's no different to many marriages before her. You characterise it in modern individualistic terms as her being treated poorly....yet she could have said no but from what I saw she plainly wanted the fame and importance....just like Harry's bimbo....She also had affairs like they were going out of fashion. The idea that this Diana bulls*** is one of the worse things they have ever done is laughable. Just in the last year alone they have failed to hold a government to account that has destroyed our economy, erased our freedom and created a huge health crisis all in the name of an illness that only kills the very old and very sick. Even before this they were hated by a huge section of the public for good reason.

I don't think anyone on here as said it was the worst thing however it was yet another scandal in a long line of scandals covered up by the BBC. I don't buy into the BBC is at fault for her death that is a stretch too far and impossible to prove. I prefer to focus on the facts that individuals forged documents and lied and then senior management on learning this ignored the whistleblowers and covered it up. As others have pointed out the public have no recourse, don't like the Sun, don't buy it, its not an option with the beeb hence the anger from some. I think your view is an opinion that goes against the majority one. The next GE will show if you are right though. And as I've explained already, selling off national institutions is literally the opposite of conservatism.

I would put the BBC on the same footing as any other commercial broadcaster and overseen by OFCOM. After that the BBC would be free to build whatever model it felt suited it. I would be fine if they became a TV version of the Guardian if they felt that it made sense. As for the public service aspect of the BBC like the World service I would be fine to continue to subside that from general taxation either as part of the BBC or in a new public service unit if the BBC doesn't want it.
But surely that just makes getting rid of the thing even more pointless. Why fund the service for the rest of the world but not us?
