Hi all.

Wanted yur views on this and any advice.

I work for an estate agents and most of my wage is based on commission.

Long story short, my MD has decided to pay us 100% of our wage, up until Thursday 26th March.

After it will be 80% and work from home or furlough me and 80% from government. Its more than likely going down the furloughed route, long term and probably by next week.

Mt bug bare is that they will not pay me any commission for March. I'm talking £1750 on top of my basic, even though its guaranteed money for them.

I know they still have their overheads, but I know they have reduced the overheads by 100k a month already since the virus, plus all other staff will be furloughed 2moro and that takes the wage bill down from 80k a month to 20-25k, just for our managers.

If they furlough us, I know they will still expect me and us to answer the IP phone that is now currently in my lounge.

I was going to argue all this, but after a video call today with MD and Chairman, they have basically said, we could just let you all go, but that doesn't seem fair and obviously they will still need us long term and short, so they will either let the goverment pay us or they will this month.

My head is banging! Dunno if I'm being mugged off or I'm being out of order.

Thoughts guys?

Hi SDE -
I dont know the answer to your question(s) but I would suggest that you go on Linked In & see whats on the home news feed / & look at whats trending, the reason I say this is there are a lot of very knowledgeable people on there who are currently debating the legality of questions such as this from other worried employees - hope that helps,

SDE, sounds like you’re being mugged off and the money they’re pocketing is covering some of their lost revenue. It’s an employer’s market so it’s to be expected and there will probably be redundancies ahead with a damaged housing market.

Let’s not forget the workers employed in the gig economy that are classified as self-employed but in reality they are doing a job that previously came under the PAYE system, and certainly receiving the same money. I’m thinking delivery people, Uber drivers, cleaners, even some building site workers. These people are not raking it in and are going to take a huge hit if the government does not step in to help them.

When this is done and dusted karma will be happening to a lot of these horrible bosses.
Bad firms normally end up with bad people working from them.
One point about furlough is that firms still have to pay the 80% then claim it back. Cash flow could be the issue. Maybe your bosses could honour the payment for the future. A bit of middle ground and discussion.it doesnt help now but would stop your mind whirring and if he says no at least you know if my first line fits.
I made a promise after being tucked up in the past. Any firm who takes a pound from me, I will get 10 back one way or another. They think they're smart. I'm the one selling their parts on ebay

I’ve just noticed that if your profits as a self employed are one pence over £50,000 you get no payments whatsoever. Nothing. Ouch. People in the south east might still be in trouble, especially if their line of work dries up. Freelancers would fall into this kind of group.

Being self-employed I can testify it’s harder graft than most people will have being employed. No paid holiday, no paid sick pay and no company pension scheme. You have to wait for money. Sure there are some perks, but a lot of employed people couldn’t cope with the stress. It’s far easier being employed.

The measures being brought in should match those for the employed.

Do some people flaunt the system - certainly. Do those that are employed fake sick days, get paid for training and meetings.

I’ve done both. You have to work hard to get your money when you work for yourself and make your own decisions. On the plus side you don’t have someone telling you what to do.

There's a lot of truth in that. Still, you wouldn't want to work for anyone else, would you? No going back. Most bosses are total dog's cocks from time to time but at least when your dog's cock of a boss is yourself you don't get sacked for telling him so.

More importantly, Fish Mitten is a rather funny name isn't it? No idea whatsoever why, but it definitely is.
