According to the BBC Palace supporters German team would be Eintracht Frankfurt because...well, they’re called The Eagles and...that’s all really. Anyway they lost 3-1 at home today so we’re off to a good start.

Paddy power likens is to Union Berlin:

UNION BERLIN – CRYSTAL PALACE

Diminutive but picturesque and vibrant stadium, passionate and organised fans.

Never going to be the big-shots in their city, but arguably have remained far more in touch with their supporters and culture than larger local rivals.

Relegation will always be a lingering threat.

Sky Sports reckons Hoffenheim:

9. Hoffenheim... For fans of Crystal Palace

As a consistently inconsistent team with a good record against the big clubs, Hoffenheim will be an easy transition for Crystal Palace fans on the back of the Eagles' typically streaky form and penchant for springing surprises.

Under new head coach Alfred Schreuder, Hoffenheim have beaten Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen this season, but a lack of consistency, and the absence of a consistent goalscorer - which may prove nostalgic to Palace fans - has halted their charge in the Bundesliga.

I chose Union Berlin, after reading an article about them a couple of weeks ago. I had to choose a team that I couldn't relegate (well I hope not)

One small difference between Eintract and Palace is that the former has played in a European Cup final (1960, Hampden Park, lost 3-7 v Real Madrid).

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

Dropped by the Eintracht Frankfurt stadium last April after playing in an international chess tournament around the corner. Stumbled across a training session where the players were more than keen to sign and take photos with the fans afterwards. Really felt like a nice family club.
Despite their nice stadium I can confirm their club shop was remarkably small. Certainly no bigger than ours.

There’s a club in Belgium, K.V. Mechelen who are nicknamed The Crappers. I’ll be keeping an eye on them as well.

In one of those coincidences in life, this was a quiz question in The Times today ie "Which team did Real Madrid beat 7-3 in the 1960 ECF?"
