Another platform needed at least - it's just a stage that they have to go through.

Back in bygone days I heard the 'Sorter and Porter' public house adjacent to East Croydon station being referred to as "Platform Nine".

Is that when 'Underneath the Arches' was a hit?

Well, 'Flanagan and Allen' did plough their furrow for us.

I was born in 1952 - I believe that epic song was first heard in the 20s or 30s!

I recall imbibing in that Public House.

I was informed about a significant disturbance which occurred in this establishment a few days prior to a Christmas between supporters of Chelsea and our beloved team resulting in glass being strewn all over the floor.I was not present at the time!

Going back even further, there was a pub bang opposite the entrance - the Railway Arms (I think). Had snooker tables and barrels of ale racked behind counter. One of the first nice places to go when the planners started wrecking Old Croydon. Could be the one referred to above by Willo and Nic?

That's the one, pretty sure was railway arms or tavern (maybe) Inde Coope Yellow Front, Did Skol special on draught, Was as near to my house as the Cricketers, so sometimes went for a beer there with staffie before he gave it up.

Was looking for a photo on Google, but guess it was just too ugly to be remembered on film.

May I enquire as to whether the 'Cricketers' to which you refer is the small public house in Lower Addiscombe Road ?
I have also imbibed in this establishment in bygone days!

A cosy Public House.
'Mine Host' at the time I imbibed in there sadly passed away with cancer some while ago.

With regard to East Croydon station, I recall in bygone days there used to be a Railway Club adjacent to it and a chap I know used to purchase snuff in a tobacconist a few shops away from the entrance of the station. No trams in those days!

The whole pub would tilt depending where the majority were standing, if i remember correctly chelsea took a severe punishment for drinking in the centre of town, never to return! The porter and sorter was the only pub i have entered for a beer, and turned back around as it was such a dive, literally a spit and sawdust effort, all wooden but not in a nice way, more mdf everywhere!
