Sadly that’s probably not far off the truth!

Bottom line is it just highlights how unreliable the technology is and how badly used it is. Sheffield Utd will feel rightly aggrieved and at some point a relegation is going to be wrongly decided for some poor team when the technology fails yet again.

Why on earth was it not checked on VAR when anybody watching could see that the ball was over the line and even if that view wasn't crystal clear then you could tell it had to be over the line from the position of the goalkeeper?

Absolutely farcical all round!

To be fair it's the first mistake it's Made I think, from what must be a fair few and it didnt actually make a mistake in the decision. The software and connectivity let it down. The actual GLT is good, bluetooth is the problem me thinks.

The 7 cameras in the goal were obscured either by the goalkeeper, defender or the post.
This is the first time in 9,000 games that there has been an error.

PGMOL said the VAR couldn't intervene as the ref hadn't signaled a goal so there could be no check.

Sounds like one of those silly rules that does VAR no favours at all.

That’s not what cryst is stating. The information is that the cameras and GLT worked but there was failure in transmitting the decision to the referee.

The second statement is wrong as thirty seconds basic research on the internet reveals countless GLT errors...non goals given incorrectly and perfectly good goals not given. The French top league even suspended its use in 2018 after repeated errors.

Another example from page one of the search results.

It’s a case of take your pick as there seem to be several examples of GLT errors.

Haha, the camera that picked up the shot of the keeper holding the ball against the post inside of the goal was pretty perfect. All the VAR ref had to do was say to the ref. “The ball was over the line, do you want to award a goal or did you see something to rule it out?”

There are numerous camera angles showing the ball several cm’s over the line. Any excuse that the cameras couldn’t see the ball is just ridiculous. If that were the case the same could happen in any number of situations or goal mouth scrambles.

I’m more inclined to believe the information given by cryst in that the GLT detected the ball was over the line but there was a failure in sending this information to the referee. Either way, it’s very poor.

I am only relaying the comments from 'Hawkeye' who stated that it was the first time such an error had occurred in more than 9,000 matches using the system.
I don't know if the French League use 'Hawkeye'.

This was not one of the 7 cameras used by 'Hawkeye' to determine whether the ball has crossed or not crossed the line as 'Hawkeye' have stated that the views of cameras used as part of the system were obscured.

Jobsworths sticking to the "rules" rather than using common sense I guess .

Even Dean Smith accepted it was a goal.
