In Sept 85 I went to study A levels at Croydon College. One of the subjects I picked was Government and Politics.
Most of the other students had a grasp of what politics were but I felt out of my depth.
We went on an arranged trip to hear a talk by Enoch Powell.
But he's The Rivers of Blood chap isn't he?
Yes, he is, said our lecturer but I want you all to ignore whatever you've heard about him, wipe the slate clear and listen to what he has to say without prejudice. Which, on reflection, is really good advice.
On the day, I certainly don't remember him saying anything vile. But nor do I remember him saying anything to grasp onto. It was just boring to my 17 year old ears.
I lasted a term then I quit college and got a job at Croydon Job Centre. The one opposite McDonalds, not the Wellesley Road site.
A good septuagenarian friend of mine said to me back in December, "When I was younger, I would've been really excited about tonight's election. But not these days. Whoever wins, you still get Government!"

So, for me, Politics exists to divide us and keep us arguing. It's a smokescreen designed to draw attention away from what The Powers that Be are really up to.
Phew!

Great quote from the guy in his 70's. I agree with your 2nd point too. With politics there are so many variables involved that people can wheel out statistics to prove or disprove anything. The Hol, as well as the House of Commons, is proof of this.

Titania McGrath’s Twitter feed is the only opinion worth noting.

That's a good way of putting it, unfortunately. They are a self serving crowd, and if or when their actions happen to briefly align with the peoples wishes it's a rarity. If anything comes at a cost, we're the ones footing the bill or paying the price, no matter who's in power. It's not a system that's built around our interests.

I like to think i take each issue on its merits, but I'm sure I'm as guilty as anyone of going off half cocked on occasion, or starting from a position based on pre-conceptions.

That said, you'd be a better man than i to be able to listen to Diane Abbott without the assumption that what she's about to say is likely to be wrong, as you would for Trump

John Cleese makes points that aren't wrong of course, they are just completely unrealistic.

He's selling that, 'I'm above it all', let's all be colour blind and class blind and....well, let's just say there is a lot of blindness.

Don't get me wrong, I have respect for this view. I have respect for it in the same way I respect Buddhism and pacifists.

Here's the problem....it doesn't work in the real world....It's just nice sounding painkiller.

Indeed, it's been John Cleese's blindness, and the society he grew up in that has created the society he now complains about.

He complains that London is no longer an English city while when that was happening he was making these kind of adverts for the Liberal Democrats.

He supported the very politics that destroyed what he valued.....and will continue to do so over these next few decades.

I'm in the middle but since the left is going further and further left I'm being pushed further right by the day Marxism is dangerous.
