A 20 or 30 year old Volkswagen is often better-made than a new one.

When i was 18 I had a Alfasud. One of the original hot hatches. Went like a rocket, cost me more to insure it than to buy it in the first place. Rotted away in the end.

I know a charming gentleman who speaks very highly of a 'Ford Zephyr' and a 'Morris Ital' that he used to own in bygone days.

First car? Triumph Stag bought for £500. Looked lovely but needed a lot of love as everytime you as ortrd one thing something else gave up. Sold for £575 so not all bad. Since then a variety of odds and sods. Current daily is a Kadjur. Middle aged crisis is a 1972 Citroen DS all low slung chrome and French excentricity. Been slowly bringing it back to as good as it gets.

What is the best small 4 seater hot hatch ? I like the 100 horsepower fiat panda . 16 valve. 1.4 petrol. Only manufactured between 2006 and 2010 so fairly rare on the market. Tiny and fun to drive. What other small hot hatch is good ?

A Daily Telegraph feature from 2018 informs us that by then there were only 11 such cars still licensed to run on our roads. To be honest I don't know how that compares with other models from that period but you would have thought there might be a few more being run as "classic" restorations. It was introduced in 1980 and probably shared its death throes with BL as a whole. As for the Zephyr I wonder whether that was the Mark 1,2,3 or 4?

I am not able to answer this question, all I know is that he possessed this car in the 60s.

I had a mk 3 cortina, then a mk 4 and a 5, I’ve had 2 Orions and a focus, I think there’s a pattern emerging there somewhere, but I can’t quite put my finger on what it is

First car was a 1962 Singer Vogue Estate. A few years later, I treated myself to a Rover 3.5 Coupé. I didn't have responsibilities then. Today's fleet comprises a 1973 Triumph Stag (3.0l auto), and a Hyundai Kona Electric, which replaced a Jag XE last November. The Jag was fantastic - but I don't miss it now I have the Kona.
