We needed this. First item on list checked. Next is some young players, then the ground. One out of three ain't bad.

Looks good on paper and may appeal to new owners but is anything really going to change not really. Why would any youngster choose to go to Palace over all those other London clubs they wouldn't it shows this already a category means nothing to a youngster. The other thing is we may have bumped up but we still use staff that are low level mostly people that had links with Palace in the past.

U18 beat second place Fulham to go clear at the top - maybe this is the team that is going to produce a few players for the first team? [Tweet Link]
Impressive to be well ahead of Chelsea, Arsenal - and well, everybody

In the highlights of their previous game against Arsenal our left winger Jesuran Rak-Sakyi looked very handy. Plus the left footed striker David Omilabu who is banging them in looks decent too. It'd be a great season imo if we stay up and at least a couple youth players get a bit of a taste of the first team whether that's training or matchday squad. The Covid bubbles does provide a bit of an obstacle though.

for the past few years we have been heavily investing in our academy/youth set-up. with this in mind, especially having 12 players OOC in the summer we should IMO be bringing 1 def/mid/att from the ranks into the 1st team squad next season to show there is progression within the club.

Investing yes, but Cat 1 status and the completion of the Academy campus is still in the recent past. They won't bear fruit overnight. Forget about actual playing positions, it's whether the young players are good enough to compete for a first team place. So not as simple as your proposal. It's great to see players come through the ranks, but at Premiership level it's becoming increasingly difficult.

I get what you say, and Christ knows it's hard to tell sometimes, but actually the standard is incredibly, almost prohibitively high. Even a bang average player like Ayew or Townsend is actually in the top fraction of a percentage of human beings at what they do. Frightening thought, but technically true. Every time benteke falls over I think 'We must have a kid in the youth team better than this tit', but then I've also watched him (and many others) miss chances and thought 'I could have scored that'. In the cold light of day, neither theory stands up to much scrutiny, sadly.
