A much better performance and an entertaining game.
Lessons learnt?
- We are much better when we commit players further forward and win the ball higher up the pitch
- Sakho has his defensive mistakes but he is a very good passer from the back releasing the ball quickly into midfield to get us on the front foot
- Zaha is more of a threat if he is permitted to attack on alternative sides as opposed to just keeping him on the left
- Luka should be rested. It looks as if he is running through treacle , his passing has been woeful and he is not offering much to the team.
In fact in the games where he has not featured we have looked more mobile and fluid in midfield
- Ward has been a very loyal and consistent player for Palace. But imagine how much more threatening we would be if we had a full back on the right who could give us the same thrust as PVA does on the left.

In terms of overall performance last night was a major improvement.

If I was to be critical of anything it would be the way in which we conceded the second and third goals....I thought Ward and Sakho respectively could have done much better in the situations they were in.

You need a bit of luck to get anything from the top teams and we were out of that last night.

A draw would have been a fair result.

Our lack of pace at the back is one of the big reasons we need constant cover in front of them also a big reason why Wilf plays in front of PVA and not Ward. Ward wouldn’t be able to cope without someone tracking back to help him with his lack of pace.Their 2nd and 3rd goals both came from us losing the ball and them quickly attacking and most teams know this is how to beat us. Have you watched Sakho trying to run back, it is almost comical, he is like a budgie in slippers.

PVA gets away with so many errors because he has the speed to get back. This lack of pace goes right through our whole squad and in my opinion is one of the big reasons for Roy picking the same type of midfield players. It is also a big factor in why our players are terrified to push forward in numbers, they know they will be destroyed for pace by a decent side. Roy does not stop our players attacking, they stop themselves.

Kouyate in my opinion is very poor football player who couldn’t kick snow off a rope but he plays because he can run at pace and all day long.

Meyer and Riedewald have also got a major lack of pace which is a major reason why they sit in the bench. Schlupp is technically no where near as good as both of them but he plays an awful lot more. Reason being he is fast and can get around the pitch.

I know I defend Roy a lot but there is method to his madness, If we played football every week the most of you want it played with this current squad, we would have been relegated by now. Yes we would have had some nice games to watch but over the course of a year we would have got battered more often than not. Our squad is too old and too slow to play expansive footballing in this division.

I was just glad of some entertainment as since the second half against Bournemouth we'd been awful to watch. There were a couple of players who still weren't at the races, but overall a significant improvement and we're in the luxury position of results not mattering so much. Given that, I'd rather we played on the front foot and entertained and lost all our remaining games than snoozed our way to perhaps a few extra points. Toss up between Tekkers, Wilf and PvA for MOTM for me.

Edit: just saw EddieMac's comment and completely agree.

I broadly agree with this viewpoint.

I would add that Schlupp provides physicality and being left-footed provides a balance down the left. He has also chipped in with some goals.

You mentioned our ageing squad.I believe that in this post-lockdown period with a succession of games in a short period of time, we have to recognise the demands of those in the twilight of their careers.

Completely agree RH is all about players and a system. However.

Those players are older and it’s an argument against giving Hodgson money to spend. Otherwise his successor is going to have a team of ageing well paid journeymen and no money to change our style.

At the end of the day we are a mid to lower end Premier League team, but our focus should be on scouting, acadamy and longer term
planning. RH is never going to look to the youth unless forced and he isn’t a a manger to develop them. AWB was a fluke.

RH is a functional manager. Give him 100 million to spend, we will still end up with a team of Schlupps, Ayews, Kouyates etc. That has a place, but the game is evolving and RH with the greatest will isn’t. Every club (and country)he’s ever been at is the same.

I suspect RH has benefitted from no crowds, as the receptions at full time wouldn’t have been pleasant......

Finally some sense...
I just wish to point out one thing, if I may, I totally agree though from your message it seems the problem only was on the right (Ward) and only on the 2nd and 3rd goal.
In my opinion, despite PVA being fast as you described, he has some problems in his defending, and the 1st goal, unlucky as it was for Cahill, sees PVA cut out from the action, out of position, forcing Cahill to cover for their man.
You could see at the game break Roy scolding him, and from his hands gesture you could see he was telling him you've been cut out...

Very good post. I would add that even though Guaita made two good saves to keep us in it, I feel he should have done better with their second. I've lost count of the number of times since he has been with us that he's been beaten at his near post, and he always seems to go down on his knees. If he'd stayed standing he'd have had a decent chance of keeping out the shot.

In terms of Hodgson's signings at Fulham he did sign quite a few, either permanently, or on Loan, who were near or in their 30s ie Nevland, Litmanen,Dacourt, Kallio, Duff, Greening, Gera and Julian Gray.

He did take Fulham to the Europa League final where they lost to Atletico Madrid, and in the EL Fulham did beat Juventus 4-1 at home in the second leg after losing the first leg 3-1.
