The ‘solid challenge’ is sadly a dying art in professional football and is now more of a negative than a positive. There’s no benefit in getting regular yellow cards. The game has moved on from that and it’s all about technical ability ahead of physicality.

I agree with Sakho, but I think Meyer could do well if played as a number 10 or under a new manager/formation.

Out of our four midfield plodders he's probably the only one i'd keep. Since the restart Jimmy Mac superb v Bournemouth than total rubbish for 8 games. Luka likewise and Kouyate ditto. McCarthy probably played our most creative pass of the season which was to Wilf at the Etihad that set up the equaliser

McCarthy is a very solid pro with many more years to give. No wonder so many clubs are rumoured to want him.

What’s the point in selling for £5m? A small profit on what we paid but another place to recruit for.

As someone else said, if we could move on Meyer and Sakho that would be a touch, without really weakening the squad too much. Free up some wages for new recruits too.

Exactly. He's the same age as Luka, so younger than Kouyate and McArthur (the latter, despite his grand service for Palace seems to be on his last legs at 32). McCarthy has probably got another 2/3 years in him at this level. I'd be surprised if Palace let him go before his contract expires in 2 years time.

Would we really have to replace this year, given it's widely thought that Riedewald could have played more games, as could Schlupp if he'd stayed fit? And if an injury crisis were to pick up, Meyer could have played more games and Dreher's now fit to backfill the bench?

CM is the one position we are relatively flush and we may well be bringing in Eze and/or Gallacher. If that £5m allows us to buy a player in another position we otherwise couldn't afford, it could well be worth it.

How many times this season have we looked to the bench, seen McCarthy, Riedewald, Meyer, Kelly, Dann, Pierrick and wished we had a solid attacking option?

For context, £5m and the other 2 years of McCarthy's wages - with that you're not a million miles from affording the silly contract Ryan Fraser wants for a couple of years. He may not be the right option but it makes you think what this could actually be.

Instead of sell McCarthy and buy someone twice the price to replace him, it's more likely sell McCarthy, play Riedewald or a player we're looking to buy regardless, and put the money towards a forward.

26th January 2010 - Enter Administration
2nd May 2010 - D-Day 1 - Survival at Hillsborough
1st June 2010 - D-Day 2 - Survival at Lloyds
7th June 2010 - CPFC2010 exchange contracts.

In which case I’d rather sell Riedewald. I put him in the Meyer bucket of undoubtedly talented player but not one that Roy sees fit to rely on too much. The case for keeping them both could be that our next manager after Roy will get more out of them.

West Ham and Newcastle also interested. Can’t see why WH would want/need him

There are a few more I would sell before him. Not sure why Newcastle, West Ham and Villa have come sniffing?

I like him. Currently I think our midfield should be Reidewald, Luka, and McCarthy. All 3 can pass and are relitively solid.

With only 16 starts, 29 years old, a poor injury record, and one year left on his contract. I think we should cash in.

£5m doesn't seem enough when Jedi went for £4m.

I'd prefer to offload McArther, but you can only sell the players other sides want to buy.

With Luka, McCarthy, Kayoute, McArthur, Schlupp, Riedewald, Meyer, Dreher, Kirby who can all play in this position it will really take a colosal injury crisis. Even when jedinak was injured I have some vague memories of Ward filling in.

Many fans have been saying we need to offload players at get in quality. Yet now the same people think we need squad players as back up. I don't think we have the luxury of having both. We can't hoard a lot of average players if we want to make space for a few good players.

There does appear to be a lot of interest in him. It would be good business to sell to the highest bidder, provided they have a younger alternative in mind who is at least as effective. Or a young Palace player who could step up?

Maybe Boateng is ready to step up?

There is an Eze answer to that one.
