Should we be adopting a new formation to help us play with a bit more attacking intent
Obviously new players would help but can Roy really change our formation with the players we have
It might even give Wilf a kick up the backside (if he’s still here)

sorry to say that Roy is stuck in the way he likes his teams to play , so don't expect a different formation next season

Unfortunately:
1. Historically Roy doesnt seem to like change, either to system or team.
2. What leads you to think we will sign enough/any new players to make a change possible?

Historically you just said something that is not true, as he changed tactics numerous times in the 3 years, every season adapting it to the team he had.
In 2018 he played 4-4-2 already [Link]
(although that's not entirely true either, as it was a 4-4-2 on paper, but RLC used to move towards the center making it more a 4-3-1-2)
But still, when he had the players to do it, he did.

You are right in that it is all about having the right players if you want to change formation. Our standard 4-3-3 that was mostly played last season becomes a 4-5-1 whenever we played anyone half decent and thinking about it quite a few times when we were not playing someone decent. It's a defensive set up however you look at it which is why I don't think Roy likes 4-4-2 that much.

Spot on , it always makes me laugh when i see the tv graphic put us as playing 4-3-3 , yeah when we are on the break , the usual set up is 4-5-1 , Roy is a pragmatist , most of our games we are there to nick a result . Boring, but it can be effective sometimes , it will take a big leap of faith and player and staff recruitment to change that .

interviewer " iggy , do you think you influenced anybody?"
iggy pop " I think I wiped out the 60`S "

Roy played 442 when RLC was with us. Him drifting in from the left and Macca being an industrious right mid. Remember macca saying it was a new position for him but enjoyed it.

If and big if but if Eze was to come I could easily imagine the same could happen.

The difficulty with 4-3-3 with Hodgson is that it often becomes 4-5-1 with the two wide players spending a lot of time in their own half.
This leaves the central striker very isolated and often devoid of service.
I can’t see Hodgson pushing the two wide players further forward to play closer to the striker as Allardyce did on occasions.
Hodgson prefers a more compact system with a slow and methodical build up.
So yes I would prefer 4-4-2 where at least we give the opposition defenders more to think about.
If Benteke and Zaha were the two up front we have had success with that in the past.
It would probably mean no place for Ayew which may seem crazy as he won all the player of the year awards.
But it’s about achieving the best balanced team and Ayew and Zaha would not work up front as a pair.
Anyway, when we buy 3 or 4 new exciting attacking players this window there will have to be another rethink on suitable tactics!!!
