Rather than defund the police they need to spend more money on training and especially in the area of deescalation. I can't remember the numbers but they spend many hours on weapons training and hardly any on how to stop a situation spiraling out of control.

There are simple things they need to learn. British police officers don't normally wear sunglasses yet you see loads on American cops with the wraparounds. If you are driving fine but when you pull someone other take them off make eye contact. How you talk to people, American cops are very aggressive because they have been told to take charge of the situation but that is not always the smart move.

As for their justice system you do not want to be charged with a serious crime in small town America they don't have the expertise or money to properly investigate. We have dedicated CSI experts they will probably use a local doctor for the coroner and any expensive tests would have to be approved.

As for their pleas bargaining system I have no doubt there are many innocent people in jail if you are facing 30 years hard time and are offered 3 years who wouldn't take rather that than risk being found guilty.

Their appeals process is shambolic as well, many cases where new DNA or other forensic tests should clear a convicted person but the courts refuse to examine it because the law allowing appeals is to narrow.

All of this plus the very real risk of being killed (100+ officers pa) and racism is the least of the problems.

Some valuable thoughts and suggestions there. It's worth following the Innocence Project as some of the miscarriages of Justice stateside really are mind boggling.

I'm with you on the defund the police nonsense too. There is almost a temptation to say 'go ahead', because the outcome is always a perfect lesson in why it's a bad idea. Your thoughts about the attitudes, interactions and training are more the angle that should be explored.

IF, this was to happen, as we all know in most cities in the states & smaller towns there are 'no-go areas. NOW, what if the localised Police were to be defunded, i can see the gangs, moving in, establishing there 'turf' & then you would/will have all out war between rival gangs.

So, there will be daily shootings(they dont do namby pamby knife crime), WHO, are the aggrieved residents/families going to contact for help? Cant see the Medics rushing in to help as they wont have any back-up. Medical insurance will either be removed or will rocket in price & you will just end up with huge uncontrollable ghettos that used to be cities.

The frightening thing is, if that were to happen, it wouldnt be too long before it happens here in the UK

I would suggest,...it's not a good idea to amplify differences in society.
The Black Police Force Association (in the UK), while the intentions were good, has perhaps out-lived it's usefulness ? Why categorise people on skin colour ? is that helpful ?

I was listening to Radio 2 at lunchtime today and they played an hours music "celebrating musicians of colour". Shouldn't we be beyond this ? creating divides.

Just a thought

Why don’t they just shoot in the leg once?

I was a firearms officer and I genuinely don't mean any disrespect but have you ever fired a gun before??... Shooting someone in the leg/arm is actually very difficult and as someone else mentioned the suspect can still fire back... You're taught to aim for the biggest area of body mass which is the chest and rightly so

Fair thoughts. I'll say that it was clearly excessive and disproportionate to what was happening, but where police are sometimes trigger happy, as an individual it's not a bad idea to dial down rather than escalate.

Plenty of videos of US police shooting lunatics 6/7/8 times and the person still charges at them, being shot doesnt = putting them down.

These coppers have families too and they want to go home to them at the end of the day.
