this is a wind up - it was my first game too, but I was at the back of the Arthur Wait Stand (or the 'new' stand as it was called back then), with my Dad (and bruv and sis). Don't tell me you missed the last goal cos your Dad was one of those silly sods who likes to leave early to miss the traffic - if so you are either my long lost identical twin or we're living parallel lives because we are the same person on the astral plane.

I remember it pretty well. I first watched palace in 1969 when they seemed to lose all home games against London teams 5-1 and survived by beating Man City 1-0 on last day of season at home. For the thrashing of United I was in the old stand enclosure with my dad n brother about level with where paddy mulligan picked up the ball to score the first goal. Was a great day indeed!

happy anniversary! and we beat Leicester 3-0 at the Kingpower three years ago to the day, which is probably our second best ever performance on the same day. we are at our most dangerous when saturn is in the house of aquarius it seems.

Having seen Palace beat Man Utd 5-0 in your first game must have led, in due course, to the inevitable disappointment that it wasn't always going to be like that. Relegation at the end of that season would certainly have been a reality check.

My first Palace game was in 1964, a 0-0 draw against Colchester United in the old 3rd Division, which was, perhaps, a better indicator of what I would encounter as a Palace fan in future times.

Yes, I was there in the Arthur too.
Something that’s always stayed me is that on The Big Match Brian Moore described the third goal as the great Don “in a way doing a Pele”.
Well, yes, except Pele missed his attempt.

I know. That's always grated with me.

I'll always remember that day.

The frantic rush to the ground, arriving a minute late.

The turnstile operator 'It's already started are you sure?'

The changing hands of £1.50p (I ask you).

Walked up the slope past the police horses, somehow I got a complete bar to lean on.

And then it all unfolded.

What a day.
