Interesting debate. I was impressed when by Eze in first couple of games with his shimmies and that he looked to find a forward pass. A few games in and the shimmies have not changed and whilst he has not been bad he is not influencing the games from the sub's bench in a way that say to the manager you can't leave me out next time. Schlupp has his critics but he is strong quick and direct plus good in the air. Our results in general are better when Schlupp plays.

I don’t accept that Zaha and Eze can’t play in the same team, although I can see Roy could may reservations due to his conservatism.
Eze could play behind Zaha and Batshuayi/Ayew with three midfielders behind them e.g Mcarthur, Mcarthy, Jairo.
We would still have a solid look.
A 4-3-1-2 formation.
You play a system to suit your players in an ideal world.
Roy starts with a system and seeks to shoehorn players into that system.
Although not totally blameless, I’m sure this is part of the reason Benteke and Meyer have failed.
If Roy not careful Eze and Batshuayi could go the same way.

Ah Patrick. Unfortunately, I can't argue with your analysis. I think you hit it dead on.

We’re on the same page about Roy’s preference for team shape over game changing talent.
Many on here just want Eze given the best opportunity to flourish and this is unlikely to happen if there’s an attempt to turn him into Schlupp and Townsend.
They are good players, but different, and Eze has an entirely different skill set.
Brendan Rodgers doesn’t ask Maddison to cover his full back.
I’m not disputing Hodgson has had limited success with his methods but am unsure he’s the best manager for Eze’s development .
I genuinely hope I’m proved wrong.

He's not. Right now it's not his job to manage Eze's development and although I hate to write that it's the truth. Roy's job is to keep us up. He can kill as many careers and as much joy as necessary but the truth is he just needs to keep us up and the carnage of damaged careers or boring, mindless games is just the cost of that. I don't like it but it's the reality. I'm glad I only have to watch it, not live it.

Playing Eze gives us a higher chance of winning games and thus staying up imo. However Roys ethos is playing to not lose rather than playing to win. I bore myself sometimes with going on about it.. but nothing will change with Roy.

Take away heading a ball from Guita’s kick outs then there is no reason for Schlupp to keep Eze out of the team. Schlupp does not cover in defence like a lot of people think and this myth about his amazing solo runs that he goes on is nonsense. He takes off like a bat out of hell and looses the ball 99 times out of 100.

Schlupp with that left-foot provides some balance on the left side and he adds more physicality than Eze.He is also more used to the 'Hodgson way' having worked with the manager longer than Eze.

I suppose supporters will ponder as to whether Hodgson specifically asked for Eze to be purchased or whether the club saw the opportunity to purchase a young flair player who was highly rated in the Championship and perhaps could have been deployed as a Zaha replacement.

Another of the downsides is that it will put decent players off joining us as no quality players will want to come to Palace just to warm the bench

But it’s only Roy’s apparent insistence on seeing it as a straight choice between Schlupp and Eze that causes the issue.
They are very different players and there’s no reason why both cannot be accommodated in the team.
It will require some flexibility and a new role in the team for Eze, but that’s Roy’s job and to just stick Eze on the bench is a cop out.

Exactly, It is Roy’s job to find away to fit the players into the team. No player has a right to just start every game.

It will be interesting to see what he does know the Ayew is back. Ayew has never had a set position but Roy will try get him straight back in.

I would put Eze in the attacking midfield slot with Schlupp at left back the two Macs in midfield and Wilf, Ayew and Andros up front. Bats doesn't seem to have had the same effect as previously and Ayew's combative efforts and skills do make up for his height. Of course Roy will continue to go with safety first until he and Steve P have a car park meeting. Although that may be down to not having a settled pair of centre backs.

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).

Give Eze a starting number and his confidence will grow! Him and Riedewald ought to be played together..creativity vs donkey work (Schlupp and 2 x Mac)

Eze is not a winger, if we bought him to play on the wing somebody didn't do there home work, he plays through the middle ask anyone from QPR, MM is the same not a winger, square pegs in round holes.
