Been wondering lots of scare stories, but would love somewhere to be able to escape to at the weekend and chill out. Especially after lockdown.

I bought one 3 years ago in Whitstable, I’m down here now. Mrs and the kids love it, it’s just having a base away from your house.
Got a pool, tennis courts, bar. Etc.
They are down here for a lot of the summer holidays. 10 months of the year we can use it.
We’ve got young kids, we love it.

Go to a variety of places without the hassle, book through the 9.50 holidays online. Don't even need to buy the newspapers, the codes can easily be found online by googling. I appreciate many people like to have all their stuff there ready for them of course.

Good call. A better approach in my view.

I planned on getting one two years ago. Spoke to a few sites down the south coast asking about getting a adapted van but the prices were stupidly high, then found a a 10year old adapted one for 9k and a site willing to site the van only to be told it will cost me £13,000 to for them to let me through the gates and that didn't include putting it on the plot, connecting the supplies and a full years ground rent, even though it was half way through.

Still no van of our own, but hire one on haven in the summer for a week

buy a ruin of a cottage, with one or two acres of land around it. Connected for electricity & water.
Then use it to park your hired camper van whenever you wish to holiday.

When you are not on holiday, the camper van returns to the hire company.

If the location is within a 15 minute drive of good amenities then happy days. You may even choose a location within a one-hour flight of Gatwick. Hire the camper vehicle on the other side.

last summer i met a German family at a French camp site.....the dad wearing a Palace shirt.

Alot of it depends on you're financial situation. I was fortunate enough 2 years ago to be in a position to buy one outright at Bunn leisure in Selsey.. However... There are alot of hidden costs such as apart from ground rent you have gas, electric, water, insurance (you cant pitch it without insurance)

They have you by the balls... you cant have a shed or decking etc unless you go through Bunn Leisure and the prices are ridiculous...

Plus when you buy the van the contract says that they must have first choice to buy it back if you want to sell.

Listen I loved it and used it alot for a year but sadly when I divorced the caravan was in both our names and had to be sold... It was only a year old and the price Bunn leisure gave us for it was nothing short of a joke but we had to take it...

In short all I would say is make sure you're in a position if you get one where you're financially comfortable... if not I wouldn't bother personally

totally agree, ours is on Bunn, but we use it a lot, especially this year once the lockdown had passed..i think that all site owners are they same with the rules, if you go into this fully aware of the extra costs then its all good...but dont expect to make any money from it...its our bolthole away from real life...oh and selsey is a bit strange to say the least ha ha

They're justified, and they're ancient
And they drive an ice cream van

Luckily my parents have a caravan there on west sands right by the beach so I still get to go down there and use it a fair bit.

Yep know what you mean about the locals... Selsey is a typical seaside town... The locals are a bit rough and ragged and strange! To be fair if it wasnt for Bunn Leisure it would be an absolute ghost town... The Riviera is a cracking restaurant.

My Friends parents sold their house and bought one of these Statics, they spent 10 months on site and then wintered in Spain/Portugal where they had Hotels that catered all inclusive for wintering Brits they used my friends house as their permanent address. This way it released all the equity in the house they owned. Sounds like a good plan to me.

Having worked for Bunn Leisure Amin sales you would be scared if you saw how much money they make in selling you the vans and locking you into the pitch fees per year !!! Absolutely mad ! My advice stay well clear unless you want to end up in debt ! Used to see it all the time ! If you want out they are worth nothing ! Compared to when you purchase them !

My parents had a static years ago, it was ok. They got shot of it, after they started to be basically held to ransom by the site owner. The fees just kept going up and up, if you dont pay it gets towed off the site. The problem you may own the caravan, but you dont own where it stands, so a bit pointless.

A mobile is better option, but you need to be small.
