Sakho has the ability to go from the sublime to the ridiculous. Sadly the latter has become more common in the last year. If he could stay fit and get a run in the team then his fitness and concentration levels seem to improve drastically, but he only seems capable of staying fit for two or three games and as such has become a bit of a liability. It's a shame as I really like him.

Cahill and Tomkins for me is the best partnership if they can stay fit. Dann is good when we sit deep, but he is so slow these days that if we push up we are exposed. Kouyate is the best athlete and I always feel fairly confident with him in the backline. When you think Liverpool are crying about losing VVD and I'm not sure we've had the same centre-back pairing for more than two or three games running this year. We are lucky to be well stocked in that area.

Thanks for a sensible response. Why on earth would my choices be a wind-up? The downer people have on Sakho is weird and wrong. He reads situations brilliantly, is immensely strong and his passing is crucial in launching attacks. Yes, he has an error in him but they all do and his get scrutinised far more than other defenders (eg. Ward v Brighton).
He and Tomkins were our first choice for a long time and I still think they are our best two, although we are lucky to have such strength in that position.
I respect what Cahill has achieved in his career but I think many Palace fans have an inflated view of how good he is. For me he looks to knock it back to Guiata too often rather than be a bit braver in his passing options.

There's little doubt that Sakho on his day is decent. However, you cannot simply ignore his regular clangers, which often cause goals. This is why your post isn't being taken seriously.

If you had to rely on Palace to get a result on the final day of the season to stay up, Tompkins, Cahill, Dann & Kouyate are all more reliable and would give most fans more confidence. The Sakho time bomb goes off roughly one in three games. This makes him a liability.

The downer is not weird and wrong. He's our highest paid defender so should be our best and he's not living up to it at the moment. That's part of the territory when you're earning over £100k per week.

1. Cahill
2. Tomkins
3. Sakho
4. Dann
5. Kouyate
6. Kelly
7. Ward

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

Sakho

Positives: the best ball playing centre half we have. Negatives: he is poor in the air given his size and the position he plays.
Always liable to make a mistake (probably because of the positive mentioned).
His wages are high.
He's always injured.

On the balance the negatives far out weigh the positives.

I would say our best pairing at the moment is Kouyate and Cahill or Kouyate and Dann.

Kelly very underated and has never let us down.
Tomkins - the injuries are mounting up but an excellent centre half when fully fit.

We are lucky to have such experience, quality and depth in this position.

I agree with Bexley Eagle. I think right now its a really strong position for us assuming we can keep the majority of them fit.

What concerns me more is next season and beyond as they are all getting on a bit and the injuries are likely to increase.

I hope we are researching some younger replacements.

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

Absolutely bang on with regard to each player. Hopefully Woods steps up in the next year or so as a decent replacement for one of the older players otherwise we might as well release him.

Moving forward and hoping that they could be both fit at the same time, I'd like to see a pairing of Kouyate and Tomkins.

Tomkins and Cahill top it for me, assuming Cahill can return to full fitness.

Kouyate has done a great job filling in and is next up - he doesn't really deserve to lose his place although he can play elsewhere. As for the others, Dann okay a but but slowing up a bit. Kelly still good cover, and Sakho, excellent one moment but a disaster the next, and his blunders are becoming a little too frequent to overlook.

I haven't seen enough of Woods to comment.

Agree that in terms of ability, Sakho is our best defender. His performances have dropped, but he's not isolated in that regard.

Personally, if a game was tight I'd take him off in that last 10-20 minutes as we know that's when his concentration starts to wonder off.

I also wouldn't play him with Kouyate/Mitchell as I dont really trust him to lead the back 4.

On their day and when fully fit, I reckon Cahill and Tomkins are our best and most consistent performance wise pairing.

Sakho should either be sold in the Jan window, otherwise be gone Summer 2021. 30 plus, injury-prone, high wages and above all else has too many clangers in his locker that almost inevitably leads to us conceding a goal.

Kouyate has been deputising brilliantly since making the transition and I see no reason why he can't make that his main role in the team and squad going forward

1. Cahill
2. Tomkins
3. Kouyate
4. Dann
5. Sakho
6. Kelly
7. Woods

In terms of consistency over a sustained period Dann has been great for us and is much underrated.
I can only recall a handful of bad games from him for us over a number of seasons.
He’s not as error prone as Sakho , is rarely beaten in the air and would continue to provide a threat in opposing boxes if the delivery from set pieces was better.
Cahill reads the game well and knows the positions to take defensively but Dann shares this attribute too.
The downside with him is age and lack of pace, but in fairness he rarely leaves himself vulnerable to one on ones.
I’m always comfortable to see Dann in our lineup and think it’s an insult to see him as a bit part player.

Roy definitely has a dilemma on his hands now most of the players are fit, Sakho won’t even be in the squad very soon which I for one will be over the moon about. He is awful nowadays.

It will be interesting to see what Roy does with Kouyate. In my book he’s been our best player so far this season,
