What a combination. Covid19. VAR. The lawmakers - handball, offside etc. A PL football game is an absolute lottery. 70% of fans want VAR stopped apparently, there is no hope of that, the PL is for the rich few.

I have mixed feelings about modern football. There is certainly a greater level of all round skill in the game than when I started watching football in 1964. Watching some of those 1st round FA cup ties on BBC last weekend, it was noticeable how even non-league clubs have largely dispensed with the big hoof and like to play a quick passing game. I have enjoyed seeing some wonderful players at Selhurst over recent years. Of course the downside is that those wonderful players have increasingly been wearing the shirts of a small group of elite clubs. However, the vast sums of money that players are paid makes me feel queasy, and less forgiving of any shortcomings they display on the field, but even more so for any off-field nonsense. Once big money enters any sport it is usually the beginning of the end as far as consideration for the paying public is concerned. We pay huge sums to watch football, and the TV companies determine kick-off times without any regard to those who actually have to travel to the match, particularly away fans e.g. a Palace home game against Sunderland scheduled as a Monday night KO! Or an evening away match at Everton. I also hate the way the big clubs are increasingly attempting to engineer the way football is run to suit their own needs. I loathe it when the game is called a product, or a proposition. It reeks of corporatism and men in suits with an eye to lining the coffers of their club, and their own pockets, without any vision of the bigger picture of football and what it means to fans. I have renewed my season ticket because I still love watching Palace. They are a club that still have their feet on the ground and a set of players who generally aren't a load of posing superstars (although still paid generously)

We�re established in the promised land and actually it�s a dull existence with very little drama. The season is usually over by end of Feb with no realistic chance or Europe or relegation. It will be the same again this season. In the championship it felt like there was so much more riding on every point and the games came thick and fast. The best we can hope for now is a cup run. The other is VAR and how�s it being applied. It has drastically reduced football enjoyment to the point that I don�t watch football now unless it�s Palace. It is a cancer on the game. It won�t be long before attendances start dropping because people will be fed up of it. I saw on the news the other day with the Scotland keeper saving the penalty to get them into European Championship and he was too worried about his save being chalked off and looking at the referee rather than celebrating. Those moments of ecstasy which you only get at footy are sadly a thing of the past.

Thanks Vaibow for starting this thread. Some interesting thoughts and views not to mention reminiscences. Although I did renew my season ticket this year and am ready for the 7-8 hour round trip to any home games that we might be able to see, I'm not sure how much longer I can do that so may just settle for gold membership next year and take in a few home games and local away games. Somehow the absence of fans has dampened the joy of watching games on TV and has got me wondering what is my fascination about football really about.

Thanks Vaibow for starting this thread. Some interesting thoughts and views not to mention reminiscences.

Although I did renew my season ticket this year and am ready for the 7-8 hour round trip to any home games that we might be able to see, I'm not sure how much longer I can do that so may just settle for gold membership next year and take in a few home games and local away games.

Somehow the absence of fans has dampened the joy of watching games on TV and has got me wondering what is my fascination about football really about.

IMO the Football Authorities,Regulators Cubs and TV companies have missed/are missing a huge opportunity to introduce what could be a very fulfilling virtual match day experience..!! And it�s fuelled by greed, inertia and no small amount of lack of consideration for fans and imagination. �15 is way too much to ask fans to pay to watch their team live, general response from fans in lack of takers have proved that.. !! Bring it down to a fiver and see take up increase - after all if you treble the take up revenue at a �5 for many it equates to the same to �15 for a few..!! Offer discounts for current season ticket holders/members. Introduce virtual match day programmers, fans forums and interaction to build a virtual atmosphere experience - all easily delivered in the Digital world we live in..!! Distribute the revenue proportionately between all clubs from the Prem through the tiers, including grass roots. Do this and the Advertisers/sponsors will come flocking creating yet more revenue. Fans will also come flocking some of whom ardently support their teams but in normal times have no chance of being able to get tickets to watch their team live. Would also bring in new fans off the back of enjoying a match day experience for the first time. Kick off times drive me nuts totally dictated by TV - why do we still have late evening kick offs? COYP Your suggestions seem common sense and reasonable so have absolutely no chance of being taken up by the Premier League or it's lapdog, the FA. They are all about Sheiks, Oligarchs or US investors - not at all about their actual customers - the fans. For this reason, the home game as we know it will fade at the highest level - it won't be long. Palace may be OK but increasingly, Premier League games have more tourist fans than real fans. Find a Scouser at a Liverpool game (they're all Irish, Norwegian or German) or a Manc at a Utd fame and you will have found a needle in a haystack. We're not immune from it either, as our locals don't tend to necessarily support Palace at all. Once the game has lost that - what's the point? That's what everyone is seeing. Red and Blue Army!
