Good to hear this about Roy Barry.

Certainly a robust player and Alex Ferguson described him as the hardest player he has faced.

That brings back memories that I had long forgotten.

When I lived in the North East I used to work for the ex chairman of Middlesbrough who had become personna non grata and wishing to keep a low profile so I became the front man for his companies.

I went to the opening of the Ayresome Park restaurant and sat at lunch with a number of Middlesbrough fans including the chairman of a local recruitment company that I was doing some work for but had never met before.

He was chatting a lot and holding court and I rather naively asked him whether he used to play to be met by grins all round from everyone else. His name was George Hardwick and not only did he used to captain Middlesbrough but he was also captain of England too, although well before my time

Personally I'd have preferred to have kept the Claret and Blue for historical or continuity reasons, but I accept there's no going back now that the Red and Blue is fully established. And they did herald some exciting times!

Like everybody else I don't recall any fuss really, but the club was in a bad way at that time and I think any changes were generally viewed positively. No one has mentioned that by changing from (imho) dull claret and blue also worn by West Ham, Burnley, Villa etc to red and blue our colours immediately became unique as nobody else played in red and blue then. Changing to Eagles did seem a bit strange at the time, but then glaziers is hardly a cool nickname is it... I’d be quite disappointed to revert to the old colours and nickname, but I’m sure I’d get over it. What would be fantastic would be to be acknowledged as the oldest professional club in the world, CPFC 1861.

Having been a fan since the late 60's I have fond memories of those days and also don't recall much fuss about the rebranding. But why do we have an eagle? I think it was originally meant to be a phoenix, as in a phoenix rising from the ashes of Crystal Palace. I have no evidence to back this up, it is just a gut feeling.

My first match was 1965, FA Cup, Palace 3 - Forest 1. I don't think anyone used the name 'Glaziers'. "Come on you glaziers" doesn't really work does it.
