I don't recall there being any real controversy about the change. There were probably some older fans who felt they were being divested of a bit of club history but in reality supporters never really referred to the club as The Glaziers (not since I started going in 1964 anyway), nor do I recall there being any songs or chants with any reference to the name.

On the contrary, the Eagles nickname has resonated with fans a lot more even though it was/is a slightly contrived nickname.

I was a relatively late arrival on the scene (1969) but I don't recall any special crowd chants (other than "PAL...IS" or particular affinity to the old claret and blue regime.

When Malcolm Allison arrived he literally brought colour and a new buzz to the ground. I couldn’t wait to don the new colours ... my Gran knitted me a red and blue bar scarf between the first couple of home games. She then established a production line to equip Grandad, Dad, Uncles and Cousins with scarves and bobble hats on the terraces. Sourcing such basic supporters 'equipment' from home seemed to be the norm in those days.

The atmosphere changed and there was a constant buzz as "EEEE...GOALS!!!" emitted from the crowd. A good Cup Run certainly contributed to the fervour.

It's hard to believe the man was only at the helm for three seasons as he had such a profound impact at the club. Although he did return for one more season sometime later.

Allison was a charismatic figure.
He would sit in the Directors Box during games as if he was an Emperor.
I remember he brought in Peter Taylor, then a very talented young winger, and played a Scottish hard man Roy Barry at right back behind him, in case any of the opposition ‘took liberties’ with Taylor.
I recall one game where Taylor skated past three defenders to set up a goal with a piece of outrageous skill.
As Taylor trotted back to the halfway line for kick off Allison shouted from the Director’s Box to attract Taylor’s attention.
Alllison simply gave him a thumbs up and bawled ‘Magic.’
Taylor seemed to grow ten feet tall and had a magnificent game and a very good spell with Palace.
Allison loved working with top players but also improved lesser players like Stewart Jump and Derek Jeffries.
A chaotic spell in the club’s history , but a lot of fun.

Isn’t it amazing that this was one of the best times ever under his leadership being a Palace fan yet he took us down two divisions? I loved being a Palace fan during that time, and that cup run was superb. Can you imagine the message boards now if that happened :-)

When he succeeded Bert Head he never joined until March which of course was not long before the end of the season and we got relegated that campaign.

His first game in charge saw us beat Chelsea 2-0 with Jim Cannon scoring on his debut.
