Benteke, Ayew, Batshuayi, Connor Whickham and Alexander Sorloth have combined to score just 26 Premier League goals in 123 games, going back to the start of 2017.

The stats are damning despite Hodgson's claim that we can score goals without Wifie.

On the rare ocasions where we passed the ball forward accurately, we lacked the quality to open up Burnley.

Hodgson must address this. Unfortunately, while Wilfie masks our obvious short comings, the stats suggest otherwise.

Another season in the premiership with bellowing pains of frustration beckons.

In my humble opinion, McArthur, crossing with his weaker left-foot put a tad too much pace on the cross and it could have been better directed.

At least Batshuayi was in the danger zone and made a valiant effort to steer it in - Benteke would have been outside the penalty area !

When one considers this effort, the two saves the goalkeeper made from Benteke and the save from Batshuayi, we did have our chances to win the game and I feel that Burnley were fortunate to get all the points.

I agree. On the balance of play and with the chances created by both sides the game could have went either way. They got a lucky break due to Kouyate miss hit header. They hit the post when should have scored and woods had his chance with his head.

We had Bats 1 on 1.
McCarthurs bad pass.
Benteke’s chance which he had a mili second to react to.

It was a poor game over all but I don’t believe it was as bad a performance as some are making out. Townsend had his worst game of the season for us yet he always seemed to be the one in possession of the ball around their box.

Something I’m afraid Roy would never consider. I would have started Schlupp left, Townsend right, Benteke up the middle and Eze playing where he should be, off of and slightly behind Benteke. With Wilf out that would have given us more balance and added a bit of steel in the air, so that we didn’t just have the ball coming back at us every time the ball went forward above chest height.

In such a format who you pick as the supporting central midfielders is pretty much up for grabs however given the way we know how Burnley were going to play I would probably have stuck with Riedewald and McArthur (maybe bringing Cahill back into CH and Kouyate stepping up to take McArthur’s role as an alternative).

My main point is that Burnley knew exactly what we were going to do and out played us, out muscled us and sat back once they scored playing on the knowledge our standard one dimensional style of attacking was not good enough to break them down.

Yes we had a few decent chances, but so did they. I am of the opinion we didn’t deserve any more than we took from that game. What I will say however is that the overall performance was better than in the Chelsea and Brighton games even though we picked up a fortuitous point against the weed.

Anyway, bring on the Newcastle match and let’s see if there are any tactical changes made to how we set up and the personnel used in Wilf’s absence.

Agreed, good points as made by some of us also. Hopefully the Newcastle match will go in our favour?

Excuses
If the manager is not happy, make changes like Murionho would make.
The manager is in charge

Our inability to rescue something from the game came down to a lack of quality and tired looking looking players rather than any tactics. The squad's a ticking time bomb and has been for a while.

I nearly fell off my chair when Townsend referred to breaking into the top ten.

The centre-backs should accept a fair bit of responsibility for the first half and Roy, not for the first time this season, bemoaned a lack of willingness / quality to find a forward pass generally.

The comments that the spine of the team didn't really turn up (or just weren't good enough) are true.

You flatter a poor Burnley side

I didn't think we were that bad. You have to accept that adapting to life without Zaha would take time. But no reason we couldn't.

The main thing for me was that Clyne looked very decent on the ball and okay without it.

Townsend was abject. He did one pass that was so awful he held his hand up in apology for 20 seconds.

Burnley were always going to be bang up for last night and so it proved. When they have their first choice defence fully match fit, they are without question a tough nut to crack.

And so it proved.

Ayew does not play well with Batys when in same team, review two seasons ago. Ayew became the "Bit Man" while Batsy excelled!!

we didn't look too bad until we got to the final third then we didn't quite click, poor choices, over-hit passes etc Ayew was unusually poor, Andros was appalling, he's OK but is quite predictable as an out and out winger, he'd be better as a wing back but we don't play that way, I've been a bit anti-McArthur not out of opinionatedness, I just think he belongs in the championship now helping a team like Sheffield Wednesday or Birmingham, very little attacking threat and gave the ball away at crucial times. It's no disgrace to lose at Burnley, they do what they do very well, and we probably deserved a point, but Pope is a bit good. I hope we can get safe asap and go for a cup run otherwise it will be as boring a season as the last one. Contracts are up in the summer so I'm looking forward to a shake up, I think we need a new midfield, keep Reidewald all the others can foxtrot oscar - we are crying out for what Loftus Cheek gave us a couple of seasons back, mind you we played through the park quite well yesterday, but Burnley shut us out when we got close extremely well.

Whose the manager
who picks the team
who decides on the tactics and formation
who puts square pegs in Round holes?
Kouyate was a stop gap centre pack, why is he still there, very questionable defending and easy for the opposition to see his weaknesses, ball watching, no strong defensive header and lack of defensive positioning...

oh yes and what tactical changes did Roy do during the match??

You are very very wrong, Kouyate played like a rabbit in headlights and he was the reason we lost because he headed the ball into our box instead of away and into the path of Rodriguez how on earth is that the fault of Mr Hodgson, Kouyate gave our team no reason at all to settle and build, and how on earth can Mr Hodgson be blamed for the best move of the first half to be ruined by McArthur overhitting a simple pass for Batshuayi to score with an open goal. if you look for negatives you will find them.

Some managers will change formations during a game IE from a back 3 to a back 4 and vice versa and I have witnessed this on the TV recently.
Certainly Mark Warburton is not averse to changing formations during a game.

Hodgson just keeps to the same formation and just replaces player for player.I am not stating this as a criticism, just as a fact.

Yeah but when the strongest argument about the manager is his lack of use of Benteke who, despite various assertions on this board, can’t hold the ball up or use his size, run the channels or score goals then the argument is as weak as piss. The bloke’s fvcking useless.
Give it up.

Some serious bollocks and 2020 hindsight being spouted on here as usual.

Where was Meyer ? Surely not injured as he has never played. Are we saving him for the scratch team humiliation of the Cup in January ? Is he league tied ?
