I find it strange as well that they feel it's required when it's tied to a % of GDP. This means the amount automatically reduces when GDP does and we are not proportionally worse off in any sense.

It does feel like a purely political move to appease the right of the support.

So you'd keep it the same as it is? At best a sweetener for trade, at worst a slush fund for despots. If a slush fund is required it should just be done in the open, not hidden as aid. This doesn't aid anyone except arms dealers, so I wouldn't worry about it.
As for the right wanting this cut, perhaps they should not, surely they want the UK to maintain its share of arms sales.
What I like is that some of the richest countries in the world, countries far richer than the UK receive aid. How the f#ck does that work? I want overseas aid from Canada, I've been considering a hot tub for a while.

A few years ago, Ireland managed to get foreign aid back from Uganda. It was something like €4million. The money was spent buying fighter jets.

Yup giving aid to despots so they can buy our weapons which they then use on their own citizens, either that or the Presidents wife goes shopping in Paris.

Irish fighter jets? What's the point of that? To defend against the evil Welsh fighter jets?

I think it's the RAF who get involved when the Russians mess about around Ireland.

That would make sense.

I'm still enjoying the idea of Irish fighter jets....when they travel outside of Irish air space do they start singing songs about how much they miss Ireland?

China has all but wrapped up Africa & is working hard on the rest of the world, throwing bungs to despots stopped being an effective way to do business many years ago.

People need to realise we have sleep walked into a cold war with China and we have pretty much lost the fight on this front already.

A good point however do we really want to get into a bidding war with China as to how much money we give a despicable regime?

China is actually doing some good in building railways and transport infrastructure in Africa however it comes at a high political price. The Chinese are quite happy to ignore human rights abuses whilst arm twisting the local government to get its way.

I think the way we compete is to allow Africa greater access to our markets.

Apparently it is a deal done on not much more than a handshake and not discussed in polite company And a lot of critical voices within the R.O.I who believe they should be able to effectively police their own airspace.

Some noises made recently about them maybe buying Swedish jets.
