Why is it our assume that our players are now incapable of attacking,!playing more dynamic, high press & so based on there ages:

Correct me if I’m wrong but a long of players come into there prime in late 20s to early 30s

GK - Guaita - 35
GK - Butland - 26
RB - Clyne - 29
RB - Ward - 31
LB - PVA - 30
LB - Mitchell - 21
CB - Cahill - 33
CB - Sacko - 30
CB - Tompkins - 31
CB - Dann - 34
CM - Luka - 29
CM - Kouyate - 30
CM - McArthur - 33
CM - Jairo - 24
CM - McCarthy - 30
AM - Meyer - 25
LM - Sclupp - 27
LM - Eze - 22
RM - Zaha - 28
RM - Townsend - 29
CF - Batshuayi - 27
CF - Benteke - 29
CF - Ayew - 29

I have only done the players that are most likely to feature at some point in the season.

This shows that our Attacking players are still of an age where they are capable of attacking & potentially play high press.

Apart from McArthur our midfield are still of an age that can compete.

My point is & has always been that until you try you never know & there is no evidence either way to prove that the current squad can only play defensively.

It’s very easy to hide around things, but sometimes you have to be brave.

Last year when Southampton lost 9-0 to Leicester & were fighting to stay prior to lockdown all there fans were complaining however there Manager went away & looked at the team/tactics & made a change to the system & now they are flying.

8 of that same team played against Wolves the other night.

Again what I am saying is sometimes if you just make a couple of tweaks things can change.

West Ham have gone from 4-5-1 to 3-5-2 & again are doing well

Roy has to be braver & has to try in my opinion the following team

GK - Guaita
RB - Clyne
LB - PVA
CB - Cahill
CB - Sacko
CM - Jairo
CM - Eze/Schlupp
LM - Eze/Schlupp
RM - Zaha
CF - Batshuayi
CF - Benteke

I know most will disagree & say will be too left open etc but this is the youngest team we could put out & you never know until you try what we might produce.

Plenty of attacking threat & more than enough to defend, it’s time teams like Southampton, Villa etc worried about us not the other way round.

As I say only my opinions, I don’t expect to win every game but know we can achieve more if we just are allowed to create & attack.

I also can’t wait for our so called not good enough strikers to prove people wrong wether that’s here at palace or another club cause have confidence that if they play regularly & get service they will score goals.

My dear Dazza

You asserted "Correct me if I’m wrong but a long of players come into there prime in late 20s to early 30s"

If you believe our players in their late 20s and early 30s are in their prime I would suggest that this is a view that is not universal amongst our support base.

I don't wish to be overly critical of our players, many of whom have served our club well, but as with all players the passage of time, coupled perhaps with injury problems, reduces their effectiveness at the top level.
We have 15 outfield players who are either 29 or in their 30s.

I remember as a young lad being told on more than one occasion that a footballer should be at their peak 'around 28 or 29'. It seemed to be a universally accepted opiniont! I also took that as gospel back then as you do when you're a kid.

My own opinion however is that peak years for footballers would tend to be around 24-28 years of age.

That doesn't mean of course you do not get late bloomers or players who perform well into their 30's a similarly you will see some players peak at 18-21 and seem to perpetually go downhill. Horses for courses I suppose!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Playing pressing football requires agile, quick defenders as much as energetic aggressive forwards.

Whether our forwards could be coached to press is open to debate, but unless we change all our senior centre backs for very different ones, it doesn't really matter I don't think.

So which is it then ? Just an opinion or fact ?

The team reflects the manager and the tactics he employs. We have heard from players at his previous clubs about his obsession with shape and defensive duty above all else. I think the OP is suggesting that a different manager could get a different tune out of this set of players, and indeed why not? Movement, passing, speed of thought would all have to be heightened, and playing attacking possession based football in the opposition's half would be quite a revelation.

Those were the days when players weren't multi-millionaires by the time they were 24/25.

There are exceptions, obviously, but many players seem to me to be going through the motions to be offered a renewed contract by the time they hit mid 20s or step it up a pace or two if they're looking for a move. How many players fail to fulfill their early promise once they've got unfathomable riches in the bank?

The only peak that they seem to hit now around 28/29 is a freewheeling peak.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

Good post, you can see in performances that the desire has gone out of the game for some and that can only relate to no longer having to worry about money coming in.
