I can't see the point of getting rid of our best CB, but there's no point his sitting on the bench. He certainly stays injured a long time, but then again, so do all our CBs. Probably something to do with age. Hodgson doesn't rate him as highly as Allardyce, that's for sure. Presumably he is fit again, so why not play him? If he's not going to make the starting XI, then 'cash in'. I put it in inverted commas because the strange logic of the transfer means that he is worth more than whatever we sell him for, i.e. if we got £10m for him, we could not buy a player as good as he is for that money. I hope we keep James Tomkins and play him: brave, able and totally committed in a way I feel Sakho isn't (the committed bit).

I'd be surprised if anyone offers £10m for him, but if they did, I would snap their hands off. He's a good player but he's 31 and has missed a lot of football due to injury. We have a plethora of CB's and you can't turn down that much money for someone of his age.

It'd certainly be tempting to accept that kind of bid, and on paper we do have a lot of centre halves at the club. However, where I would respectfully diagree with you is that what we actually have is a plethora of injury-prone, old centre backs, three of whom (not including Tompkins) are out of contract at the end of this season.

I mention this for two reasons:

1. We probably need four or five senior CBs on the books just to be able to field two in any one game, as they are all so prone to injury. Though we have plenty of cover when they are all fit, they never are, so reducing the overall number is risky.

2. We might be six months away from Tompkins being the only senior centre back at the club if terms aren't agreed with Cahill, Dann, and/or Sakho. Even if we have enough CBs for this season, losing Tompkins might be risky in the longer term.

Personally I'd take good money for JT only if we have a suitable replacement secured. Otherwise it's no dice.

Sorry fat Sam you will have to look elsewhere....

We have a German midfielder, who could be the answer to their goal scoring problems, they can have cheap.

Is their problem that they score too many then?

He and Cahill are our best two CBs when fully fit....even though that's rare for both of them. It's a difficult choice really because he's miles better than Dann, Sakho and Kelly, I would hope that those 3 go first.

The centre of defence is clearly an area where we need to strengthen, but we can hardly sell anyone until we are buying replacements.

Cahill is old, Dann is too slow, Sakho is too unreliable and both he and Tomkins are injury prone to say the least.

Something must happen in the Summer.

Yes and I always reserve judgement on players going until players have come in. Remember the Ambrose and Scannell meltdown?

To my mind, it’s the second last area I’d strengthen after goalkeepers. But there you go, game of opinions as they say.

Problem is CB is a problem area creeping up on us a bit faster than the players playing there and selling assets while you still can is a consideration.

Agreed. First port of call is to renew contracts, I’d suggest we should let Sakho go though. Tompkins is a good player. I think we’d need at least £10m to consider selling, it’s a seller’s market in January. Otherwise keep him on.

Oh yes? He offers a lot more?
Like Luka he is an accident waiting to happen and, also like the captain, he gives away free kicks in dangerous positions - but for Guaita's save we would have lost to Spurs.

He is a 'commanding presence', true but has little guile and his passing is on a par with (again) Luka.
Tomkins is by far the steadier CH.

We need to strengthen all over but this thread was about a central defender.
