As a defender?
I am increasingly of the opinion that his attacking qualities far outweigh his defensive ones and that we would be better served with him playing further forward or as a wing back in a back 3 system (not that we have the right CBs for that at present).

Just as a player in general. I agree he offers more going forward...and also agree he'd be a great wing back.

Roy's been quoted as calling him one of the best left backs in the premier league. I'll take his word for it.

I feel Sam needs help with defending, once sorted which is what he'll do and the club is well safe their fans will start moaning again and he'll be moved along just like ours.

In terms of 'Defending' there has been speculation on HOL surrounding PVA.
Defending is not PVA's strong suit and it is generally felt that his strength's lie in coming forward from left-back.

PVA a couple of years ago maybe? Now no good going forward gets drawn out of position, caught ball watching. His distribution is terrible.Apart from that he is ok .Get rid asap.

PVA is strong moving forward he links up well so I feel the main problem we have is ball retention and losing it through poor ability which in turn leaves our team exposed and often out of position, normally teams are then able to attack and occasionally cause huge problems and obviously against better stronger players who then make less mistakes as in Liverpool's case the situation can be a good old thrashing.
We will be outplayed occasionally it's life in this league, we can of course reduce the risk of this with better players who make less mistakes.
In PVA's case this was highlighted beautifully with their fifth goal when he mis passed upfield and then being out of position failed to prevent their ball forward when he fell to the ground in attempting to cut out their pass and we were utterly doomed.

This of course is all our managers fault lol

Abject defending as it was against WBA when he went to ground, failed to cut out a through ball and they went on to score when the ball was cut back for Gallagher who netted.
He has never been the best defender and is unlikely to improve at this stage of his career.

Not just PVA. Defence will soon need a complete overhaul. Cahill and Dann have been excellent servants but will soon need upgrading with younger models. Tompkins ditto who is also injury-prone and Sakho to get him off the wage bill because there is now no return on the outlay.
Perhaps there might even be some games from the mythical Ferguson !!

Who else picks the team? I’m not lol ing. PVA’s a liability as a defender, always has been. He should perhaps be a little more circumspect depending on who we play against and whose responsibility is it to tell him that? Maybe he just doesn’t listen which for me is another reason why Mitchell should be back.
