Yep he is on the face of it in the same category as Townsend Cahill as an older player on high wages who we'll need for a limited spell. There'd be an inconsistency if we signed him on higher wages which he is surely after.

Really doubt he'd consider 6 months and a year is a stretch too. Players at his age are looking - quite rationally - for some security.

Surely he'll want two years. On balance I think that's doable on our current set up

We needed him at the time and there was the possibility that he would regain his form and be a bargain.

Clyne did okay for us but no more than that he certainly doesn't deserve big wages so yes if he takes a salary cut otherwise we should look elsewhere.

I’m trying to be optimistic and hoping that he’s just been unlucky with injuries and we’ll finally see him in the team later on in the year.

Clyne these days is nothing exceptional. The "he's one of ours" mindset prevalent amongst some fans (and the chairman) can't escape the fact he's no better than Ward, yet was brought in on what I presume was his Liverpool salary. It shouldn't take too much working out for Parish to realise that he overspent to cover an area that has been neglected for cover since long time. We got lucky with AWB, and it's a real shame he had to be sold.

I agree that there is very little that separates Clyne from Ward these days.

But I disagree with the rest of your post.

Yes, if Clyne came in at £80k per week, that's double what Joel Ward is on....but...no fee involved and it was a short term deal.Clearly suited both the player and the club.

As for neglecting the position, well Ferguson was brought in to do just that but we all know what happened there.

I hear you. Ferguson was a sicknote when he was brought in, make of that what you will.

Is anyone sure of this £80k a week wage that is regularly quoted? If it's from one of those contract websites they are often wrong.

IMHO that was probably his wage at Liverpool (when he was an England intnl). After a few years of constant injury his bargaining position would have been reduced significantly by last summer.

Even for SP, who can be quite a generous payer, i'd be surprised if last year he wasn't offered a appearance based contract. Initially it was only for 6 months so clearly Palace were concerned with his fitness record.

I think that 30 isn't actually past it. I have this feeling he was on 65k a week for us. Have no idea why. I would keep, certainly for this season. Ward and Kelly just aren't going to cut it. And Ferguson is now a coin toss for if he ever comes good.

I just searched on Google. Of the first 7 websites claiming knowledge, 2 didn't list Clyne, 2 more listed him being on £19k a week with the top wage quoted at £80k a week. I suspect that the £80k is what he was on at Liverpool and the rest is pure guesswork. I can't see Parish offering him over £30k/£40k a week, which may be why he doesn't appear to have signed a new contract.

We do need a mixture of experience and youth, I'd be happy for Clyne to stay another season if a deal can be done.

No, this one is not wrong, they pay the agents for the info

Agree with this thinking other than I don't think age is an issue. With advances in sports science, nutrition, and medicine, 36 is the new 30. In my youth, 28-30 signalled the tail end of a career. Now, 28-32 is often when a player is in his prime. In football terms, Clyne has a good few years ahead on top of his game, as long as he remains injury-free.

Liked what I saw of Clyne last season, and he improved game by game. Hope he signs up for two more years.
