I was 'over the moon' to receive the Pfizer jab in December. But my 2nd jab on Jan 4th was cancelled as the government wanted to give more people a first dose. My 2nd jab will not be now until March. On the face of it a sensible decision UNTIL I discovered that Pfizer have not trialled a 12 week gap between doses and both the WHO and FDA have stated that the 2nd dose should not be given later than 6 weeks. It is possible I have become an uninvited 'guinea-pig' with my protection not guaranteed beyond the end of January.

Apparently could be legal issues, as the consent you signed was to receive the jabs “as was” ie 3 weeks apart. As no one knows how effective this jab is with such a long delay between the 2, could be a minefield. Hope you stay safe and are well protected

A virologist said it can be a benefit to leave a longer gap. Not sure of the science but something to do with the immune system getting a shock into life as the first dose wains a little.

What I heard is the 2nd jab provides quality and robustness, whatever the scientists want that to mean I suppose. 82 year old had 2nd jab in Caterham hill today after 1st jab on 19th December. Don’t know why, although the centre they’re doing them in were quite good at reaching out to the elderly in spring 2020.

No doubt they're trying to offer as wide a blanket of protection as possible due to the current upsurge. That sounds reasonable, and I don't think they have any specific reason to believe this delay will make it less effective. At the same time though I appreciate that you'd have had a little more reassurance of that if they'd following the protocol to the letter, and also cancelling a jab they'd already offered isn't ideal! On the plus side, you likely have far more protection against this thing than most right now, so congratulations on that front.

Scientists from Pfizer and the University of Texas Medical Branch created a version of the variant in the lab, CNN reported. They took blood samples from 20 people who'd been given the Pfizer vaccine and found that antibodies from those people successfully warded off the virus variant in the lab dishes. The lab experiment offers hope that the people who received the Pfizer vaccine will be protected from the variants in real life ― at least in the short term. I believe we should know if the same is true of the Oxford vaccine in a couple of weeks.

A friend just called me. She turned 70 in Sept and was tipped off that one of the major London hospitals was now taking bookings for the over 70's. She has an appointment for 2 weeks time. It looks like things are ramping up.
