Although I wouldn’t be adversed to this signing, especially if under £10m, I do wonder if this is a smokescreen put up by the club, to detract attention from their main target.... Andersen or Nelsson anyone?

It's possible. Either way, what I do wonder is whether, whilst the two main deals done already seemed to have been put together some time ago, we are now back in the normal market place, competing with others, waiting to see what players become available as and when other, bigger moves happen elsewhere, running the risk of getting drawn into an auction.

There are only so many times the stars align sufficiently for Palace to get deals lined up in advance. It seems probable that all three centre backs you mention are on the list and we'll have to see what progress, if any, can be made with any.

And let's get back on topic. I hope we can get Kabak and at a reasonable price both fee and wages. What he earned at Liverpool isn't that relevant. More to the point, what was he earning at Schalke?

It is on the subject we dont know how much money we have left to spend, if its another 30m after Kabak then yes, if its out of the 30m then its a no, for me CF and RB are the most important

I agree. I do not “do” Twitter but my son has told me that Carl ( reliable?) has said we may be going back for Andersen, as a possible loan. However he appears to be a back up option for Spurs, so will not be sorted anytime soon. It would appear we are back in the normal market place and we all know how this can end!

Has , Cahill, been written off yet, or written himself off? His actual situation, might call into question ,whether this signing is absolutely needed. Is Cahill still in the list of possibilities? Does anyone know?

Agreed

One possible difference over the last couple of seasons is that we may have money this time whereas most of out competitors are cashed out from investing last time.

Big issue for me is what we are doing with our wage structure. My suspicion is Kabak is out of range on wages if we keep to the current system. His likely wages would make him one of our top earners despite being peripheral from the off. The sort of deal we might have made previously of course where salaries were outrageously high.

A quick google search suggests Kabak is on £34,000 a week at Shalke.

So no reason to think he’d be coming here as one of our top earners.

I found 65K at Liverpool

Open question how you regard his current wages I suppose but he’d be taking a hefty pay cut in PL terms if he came to us on 34K

It’s now clear Cahill ,is out,. So it has to be at least one of what’s left on any list. Kabak ,comes well recommended. His Liverpool experience should not count against him. It wasn’t that bad a cameo and , coming into that situation at short notice would not have been easy for a player more mature than he is. If the price touted is true, it should not take that much thinking about.
The problem being the boy seems to have some choices to pick from.

It’s that he has options that is the possible wrinkle for me.

Will confess I hadn’t checked his Schalke wages - see above - but there’s a pattern I suspect in players who are on the market at a cut price being able to use market forces to drive up wages.

At Liverpool I think some of his central defensive partners were possibly Fabinho and Henderson who of course are essentially midfielders.

He did partner Nat Phillips but he is relatively inexperienced at PL level and would probably not have started had Van Dijk,Gomez or Matip been fit.

Wages at Liverpool have nothing to do with it. That was a contract he signed with Liverpool while he was on loan and that loan has ended. He will go back to Shalke and 34k a week unless he moves somewhere else. If Palace wanted to up it a bit to 45k then you’d imagine that’s still a good move for him surely.

It could be that’s where an auction exists. In so much as who makes the best wage offer. If it’s to be believed the club are not shouting out for a huge fee. Yet no one seems to be jumping in with a firm offer.
As it stands his present wages would seem affordable for us, but are any of the other interested parties going to offer him more.? And that’s before any question of selling the club to him.
