I agree with most of you, other than Wilf for McGoldrick, there are no others I would swap. You could argue as well that McGoldrick was a great crosser of the ball and Bright thrived off that. It’s not Wolf’s greatest asset.

Not much to choose between Humphrey and Ward either.

For me it’s all the 90/91 team
except for Wilf and possibly Ward

Take them at their best in their prime

Martyn
Ward.............Clyne
Shaw
Cahill
Tompkins........Sakho
Thomas
Gray
Salako
Wilf
Bright
Wright

If you were to pick from our Squad then Clyne would be in over Ward and maybe Sakho over Tomkins

I probably love that 1990 team more than at least one, if not all, of my children!

One of the reasons I think we play ultra-defensively now compared to the early 1990s is that the two main things a smaller club could rely on to compete with the big clubs have been taken away: Physical bullying and bad pitches.

If you want a reminder of how much we would bully teams watch the ZDS cup final. Keown is taken to pieces by Bright and Thomas!

Anyway, apart from Wright and Bright the whole of the current team would be miles better technically than the 1990 lot, as both sides were a product of their time.

If a match between them were played on a 2021 pitch with a modern ref and VAR then it would be a comfortable win for the current side. If, on the other hand, the game were played with a 1990 pitch and ref, it would be a very, very uncomfortable defeat for the current side, one or two of whom would end up needing counselling after!

Agree with this. Great times and we had some very good players but the football was agricultural and not for the purist. Thorn and Young were great stoppers but couldn't play.

If Vicente Guaita or Jordan Pickford let in some of the goals that Seaman and Martyn did the internet would break.

One of our best moves for goals was the andy thorn flick on at the near post on corners.
Super al got his winner from one. Why we don't use that with tekkers in the middle I don't know. I suppose you have to get a corner first though!

Even taking into account the difference in class now versus then I have to agree with your choices with the possible options of Ward although he has lost a yard over the last couple of seasons. Good post.

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).
