I use freesat as I live on a boat. It works great but it is slightly different to freeview in some of the weirdo channels that are not on freeview. My main issue with freesat is that the number of box manufacturers is limited and Humax seem to have cornered most of the market.
My box does not have amazon prime and you cannot install it either.Humax are now rolling out 4k boxes but not really supporting the apps on the older boxes. Youtube app has been down for a month with no comment from when they will fix it. very poor. Humax have a track record of slow to fix apps when the author updates across platforms.

Overall if the main consideration is no monthly fee then it is a good option aside of the app issues. If you have a smart tv already then it may not matter. The recording functionality is usually two channels max and is reliable.
If you do not care about recording though a good smart tv would suffice.
Hope this helps.

I would live on a boat in the future but the enemy is against it.
How did you get to live on one and what do you feel are the positives and negatives?
I'm a nosey bugger

Long story but essentially came out of the city bank work in my forties and redundancy. Took a hire boat holiday on the Llangollen canal with new wife and family (Badger11 is my younger brother). Loved it so moved up to the midlands where the canals are not as crowded. London is full of old wrecks bought by people who cannot get on the housing ladder and is not a true representation of the boating life any more than being a traveller is to being a caravanner. No offence intended.
Moving onboard requires a lot of planning and I started with a small 35ft boat at first just for leisure and then 10 years later bought a 58ft boat to live on and got out of property completely (I do own the boat outright though) There are many rules and regulations as well as costs involved so it is not cheap but more of an alternative lifestyle. I have lived aboard for over 7 years now and during the summer months we cruise around the system and during the winter we are moored up in a marina so we have all facilities like electric and water to our pontoon. If you can cope with emptying a poo filled cassette or pumpout tank etc and are reasonably handy at DIY then it can be really good and fun. Liken it to caravanning on water.

You will get a flavour from there.
feel free to ask more but did not want to bore you with too much detail as there is a lot to it.
In Short if you love nature and the outdoors peace and quiet then its great but you are often away from the hustle and bustle of town life and those amenities if that is your thing. For me its about people...you do not usually get the backbiting and one upman ship of neighbours in houses and boaters nearly always help each other out.
cheers

Why would you want a freesat box or record?

TV have freeview built in as standard and fair few have freesat both are sort of the same thing just one comes from sat dish the other aerial

You can use old sky boxes for freesat.

In modern day this is what catchup/vod is for don't understand wanting to record it brings up memories of vhs.

Thanks mate. Just one more, do you pay council tax and what is the mooring fee.

Thanks for replying.

1. I don't have an external aerial, therefore Freeview isn't really an option.

2. I also don't have an old Sky box so that rules that possibility out, too. Do people really have old Sky boxes just lying around?

3. I like to record stuff. It's convenient for me. And there are one or two programmes that don't make it to catch up. And I may want to watch some programmes after they drop off from catch up.

See, I have done my research. And for me, Freesat is the logical way to go, especially as the box pays for itself after about 3-4 months compared with what I was paying Sky.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham
