I’m pretty sure Tom would, but he’s not here to say so...

Just getting news about draconian measures in France. I guess Macron is trying to look tough. Hope you're getting on alright.

Thanks, AS, it’s a bit like the UK in as much as the high case numbers are confined to certain areas, but the whole country suffers the same measures.

I’m pretty much as remote as it gets, so can avoid most of it, most of the time.

Macron is certainly not making many friends right now...

Keep safe.

Let's all take a couple of minutes to laugh at France in general and Macron in particular.

The covid is not a laughing matter but their politics and attempts at running a country are risible.

Being called ignorant by someone representing religion is a funny concept.

I have not read the judgment, but my take is that the court had to weigh, on the one hand, cultural freedoms, against female oppression on the other; and came out on the side of the latter. Nothing wrong with that.

If correct, that it is a woman who is making a stand against the judgment makes her position all the more peculiar.

I have to stress the balance was cultural freedom, not religious. Some Muslim women wear these outfits; but they are not Islam.

On the OP, I have just read A Short History of Europe by Simon Jenkins which was published late enough to include the Referendum. While being historically aloof, it provides a more nuanced pro-Brexit argument concerning the unwieldy, bloated state of the EU. Leave also reflects the theme of centuries of British culture of keeping very detached from Continental shenanigans.

There were points rarely argued by Leave campaigners (who insulted the electorate with confining their position to 2 catchy lines) or on this site where misplaced xenophobia won the day.

BTW, I would still vote Remain if asked today. The world is increasingly fractious and this country too small to go it alone. Still better to be in the tent right now...

'Misplaced xenophobia ' implies there can be appropriate xenophobia.

You might also put " in my opinion " at the end of the sentence as it is not a fact

The problem is that whilst Macron deserves every kind of abuse heaped upon him, he is a VERY dangerous man. Easy to mock him but in my opinion he has a very serious personality disorder ticking away in that head of his and as such, we should be wary.

France is our nearest European neighbour (dont bore me with any claims about Southern Ireland). Our military and its enjoy much closer co-operation than people realise. France is a huge global player on many, many levels.

And I am becoming increasingly convinced it is far less stable than people realise. If France implodes then we take a massive hit. And Macron is currently a wounded animal. He is probably the most dangerous political threat to the UK at the moment.

I am convinced that the reason France has been effectively put onto our 'Red' list is because the UK suspected he was going to make it hellish for the droves of people due to leave the UK next weekend for holidays either in, or requiring driving through, France. Deliberately cause massive queues and disruption, by way of his ongoing campaign to 'punish' the UK for leaving the EU. So the UK acts first.

Troubling times. We might laugh and joke about France but the reality is that our peaceful co-existence goes a long way to helping both countries thrive and Macron is a huge threat to that.

Thanks for policing my post, but most opinions on here are clearly that and not stated as fact.

In terms of construction, you will see my post is largely opinion. Why should the words "misplaced xenophobia" have to carry a health warning of "IMHO"? After all, if a poster had sad something you agree with, would you have been as quick to snipe?

On your point, there can be properly placed fear of too many foreigners coming to this country if the perfect storm for un checked mass immigration was there. If tens of millions poured across the border, even if they all started working and paying tax immediately, the public service sector and housing market would collapse.

Appropriate xenophobia; or would you call it something else?

I wouldn't have the superciliousness to suggest that I know the motivation for millions of people to vote in a particular way so it's a moot point.

Phobia means fear, hatred, loathing and more. Not just fear.

For me, there cannot ever be a proper use of a word that implies hatred and loathing for people.

Spiders I can accept for example, but not people.
