Blame the companies, they knew the situation and failed to hire and train enough drivers. People on the left often complain about the lack of training and investment in British companies well in this case they are correct.

Before we start importing cheap labour from the EU why don't we start looking after our own. I suspect there are plenty of people in the UK who would love these jobs if the companies were prepared to pay for their licence.

Isn't this what we all want companies investing in their own work forces?

I have no sympathy for the big corporations they have been getting away with poor labour practices for years because there was always another cheap EU worker around the corner.

Now they are going to have to rethink their strategy and start to look after their workers if they want to retain them.

The government must stand firm and say no. Next month 2m come off furlough and many will lose their jobs now is not the time to import cheap labour.

Train them up indeed Badger, train them up indeed!

It's not that they've gone home. DVLA are dragging their feet issuing a re license. 200k drivers waiting, including truckers who when aged over 50 need it renewed every 2 years I think. Don't always go for the favourite CP as it doesn't always win!

Heard just today 30000 have gone home mate. Thing is, we were promised shekles after, by Nigel and Jacob, they haven"t arrived !How long do we have to wait for our share out? Are we going to blame everything on covid forever?

I think 300 billion will buy more than 6 months.
Again though how is this money expected by yourself?
A DD transfer, cheque, envelope full of cash. Maybe I wouldn't take what is said literally.
Look to the USA for proof of that.

Driver shortages are down to many reasons - Brexit yes and Covid even more so.
No HGV training for a year or so due to Covid and one Haulage owner was quoted as saying he has a ton of drivers waiting for the right paperwork for the Dept of Transport before they can get out on the road.
It cannot simply be blamed on Brexit

Many may have gone back to Europe but mainly because of the pandemic as opposed to other reasons.

A sensible point well made

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

Most sensible people would acknowledge that brexit is a failure, including the tories themselves some of who are saying so.

But it does not appear to be a crushing defeat, like the 'sky falling in' although it probably actually is as it is irreversible.

Rather like Afghanistan its become normal to fail at nearly everything, brush it all of and go again.

But it's a loop there is no exit.

Agree.

I guess I am not one of the sensible ones. We have 40 years of the EU so by necessity it will take some time to untangle ourselves from it a process that started 8 months ago.

We are making progress on trade deals but more needs to be done. Due to the pandemic it is difficult to identify if any bumps in the road are due to Brexit or COVID.

The EU continues to be a hostile partner and is playing dangerous politics with Ireland. The Irish government should be ashamed of themselves for not telling the EU to stop being so bloody stupid, there are simple solutions they just wont implement them.

I'm not sure we will ever be able to definitely say if Brexit is a success or failure as one side is a fact the other an assumption e.g. We will know our economic statistics but we can only guess what they would be if we had remained in the EU.

The shortage of staff in the hospitality and HGV area has shown up the lack of preparedness by business who got lazy under the EU freedom of movement, content to pay low wages knowing that they could always replace discontented staff. For the first time in decades management is now having to look at how they recruit and keep their staff which is a good thing.

Much more needs to be done by business and government, investment, proper training, improving productivity all of which Labour loved to point out the UK was behind their EU equivalents.

As long as the Tories stand firm and refuse to allow in cheap labour eventually business will have to respond.

As for government we haven't even started to untangle EU red tape so a long way to go yet.

I don't agree that most sensible people think Brexit is a failure, the surveys still indicate that the split is about the same as when we voted.

All irish governments work for the EU ( & the Multinationals ). And all the while with very little reference to the actual wishes of the irish people. RTE makes the BBC look reasonable and unbiased.

democracy ? ha

- US warplanes at Shannon airport
- the Marrakech treaty on refugees

- immigration & housing
- citizenship & naturalisation laws

- hostility toward the UK & Brexit & the use of the Ulster border as a bullying tactic.
- a labour market which penalises efforts and rewards the workshy

- the colonisation of many small towns & villages with men from the Third World....at taxpayer expense.

all of the above Policies are at stark variance from the wishes of the irish nation.

I don't know what most sensible people would acknowledge, but for me, it is far too early to make any sensible judgement on whether Brexit will be a success or failure.

The pandemic has skewed all aspects of life and commerce
