Goldberg had ambition but it wasn’t sustainable and it wasn't very realistic either. At the moment we are treading water hoping that the development of the ground and the academy will be the lifeboat to take us to the next level. If in 4/5 years time we have upped the capacity and adding by10k to the crowd and £25-30m to our turnover that takes us to the level of West Ham and Newcastle . If the latest batch of Ruben Loftus-Cheeks, Jadon Sanchos and Calum Hudson Odois are lining up to represent their local club then I would be a lot more comfortable with taking risks and potentially going down because there is a lot more chance we are coming straight back up at this moment if we go down we could be left with just happy memories.
If Roy can help us tread water to that point when we are at the next level fine by me

After Man city we have 7 games that are all individually winnable and getting 10 pts and virtually being safe wouldn’t be unforeseeable. Then it might be nice to see Jairo getting more games and Banks and others get a chance

Taking into consideration the feeling of many on here I'd hate to think how they'd all be feeling after all that time lol

I don't see it that way - play Eze in the 10 role behind Benteke and put Zaha back out left (he's not a striker) and Townsend on the other side.

Then that's balanced and not narrow, beyond that round pegs in round holes..!!

When Eze arrived he said he was happy with the role he was being asked to play which was to be on the left with freedom to move inside.

Hodgson presumably doesn't see the squad as suitable for a 4-2-3-1 formation (which would allow Eze to play in a no 10 role). I suspect that he sees our DMs as being either too slow or not equipped to play in that system.

Yep point well made and I don't disagree with you in that our central DM's being too slow and now not up to the grade.

On that that's where I see a young DM is where we must make at least one acquisition this window - does anyone know where Flynn Downes is in terms of recovering from injury - think he is a real talent and would be great for us - and available at a "snip" if all you read is correct..!!

That is all very utopian and all that - in that let's tread water, build the infrastructure, academy etc..

If we do that and go down we can bounce back up in a much stronger position..!! As unpalatable as it is as an option - I get it..!!

Problem is that the Gulf in terms of finances is so great between the Prem and Championship - is that you run the risk of doing an Ipswich or a Sunderland.

So for me you have to deal in the here and now, whilst progressing at the same time.

That's the reality..!!

More a fact I feel.

Our players would have to be able to pass a lot better including movement to be able to get away with that formation.

Would you care to elaborate on that stroke of tactical genius you have just come up with? “Pass a lot better including movement” WTF

You do realise that 4-2-3-1 is no different in practice from 4-5-1 which is what we played with 3 DMs last season. It would still have the same players with Wilf left, Andros right, the only difference would be Eze playing in that central position of 5 supporting the lone striker and 2 DMs instead of 3.

It would work just fine, but I think we have produced better football with a 4-4-2 even if Wilf does appear more on the left than he should during the course of the match.

I don't feel Ketteridge was aiming for perfection just the next level especially one where we have an improved stadium and one where our academy will attract suitable youngsters to seriously help with our next level, we are not as it stands in any situation to be looking at the next level I feel because these issues desperately need addressing first.

Might be unpalatable but relegation is a certainty in the long run for team like us as it is for all teams bar the top six and Everton. The difference is if Newcastle or West Ham go down you are pretty certain they are coming straight back within a season or two for Leeds ,Palace Sheff united , Burnley Brighton etc you are not so sure. That’s the level we need to get to.
So for me it is the complete opposite, be cautious now to build for the future. Hodgson is a tried and tested manager with years of experience proven at this level and I really can’t see who else we could get that would give us that level of dependability to be honest. Dyche maybe but not greatly different from Hodgson Howe may be but more of risk . Could bring in someone with out the premier experience but risk the transportability of their methods and ability you might end up with David Wagner rather the Hasenhuttl.
Ambition doesn’t come risk free so sorry, you would need to define what you mean by ambition because I’m not sure what you are after.

in my opinion, those who criticize Croydon-Roy are either deluded or Brighton Trolls.

The last time that Burnley were relegated from the PL, Dyche brought them straight back up and this is their 5th season back at the pinnacle.

People talk about realities, but what are the realities for Palace?
Only ,”Big clubs,” can go forward and stay there.
Big in every sense,. Ground, high capacity, enormous finances, to call on, playing staff of high international quality. The best of Training facilities. It all has to be there in place. If you want the big time and keep it.
So is it realistic to expect , Palace, minus much of that , because in the main we can’t afford it, to progress beyond , being good at staying top or near the top of a group of teams in the lower Premier and upper Championship. Many of which yo yo . ? That for me is the reality.
