I agree that we should keep Benteke .
Zaha is only other striker [ we have to wait and see about the new chap ] we have on our books , that is if you call Zaha a striker not a winger .
All the others are a complete waste of time .
I will now put my tin hat now on

Right decision.

Without him, the only striker we'd have kn our books would be Ayew (who's contract is also up I think). People who are saying get rid of him are putting all their eggs in one basket with Mateta, a player most of us had only heard of a few weeks ago and doesn't have a permanent deal yet.

We could easily be left high and dry at the end of the season with no recognised striker.

A deal will cost £5m, a new untried striker would cost £20m and might be a flop.

nothing Benteke does would make anyone recognise him as a striker

78 weeks is a bit disingenuous.
He's already underconrract for the next 6 months so a chuck of that £9.3m is already accounted for.

I'd love us to sign a promising you striker and a CB from the lower leagues to.... but thats all ifs and maybes. Fact is, we need to ensure their is at least 1 senior striker under contract next season.

The club have worked themselves into a no win situation here, extend the contract or a player that divides opinion, or jump into the unknown without a striker.

78 weeks is based on a 12 month extension to the existing contract that is due to end 30 June. if we were to loan him out, then we may in probability still have to make some salary contribution to persuade someone to take on deadwood. Hopefully, our new striker "Mateta" will be an improvement on "Benteke" and will be our striker of choice in the weeks to come. I do understand what you say about having back up striker in case of injury or whatever, however, I would count "Benteke" as filling that role because he has demonstrated very well that he cannot run, harass defenders with or without the ball, most of his ball play skill is heading, more often than not to the opposition, he cannot play the ball very well on the floor has not lethal shot and lacks positioning, anticipation etc, most of all he can't score, more specifically, he is "useless" and we would be far better off without him right now, any extension to his last contract was madness or a mistake and the same would apply to any future contract extension!

Sorry but Benteke is a striker only in name and not for the meaning "scoring goals" keeping would be a waste of money, better off without him and let him go and make tea and toast tea cakes!

He'd spill the tea and trip over the cakes

The wise move is to wait and see if the new striker is any good, if he is he wont be on 120k a week, if he is good we have him on 18 month contract, with an option to buy of about 13m, if we then just let Benteke go at the end of his contract the 6.2m we save on not paying him will go halfway to paying the new guys fee, if he turns out to be no good, the they could offer Benteke a contact, the new striker has 14 games, to prove himself before the obligatory purchase, it will depend on if Roy likes him if he gets his chance.

Most people have given CB so much sympathy, positivity and leeway since he joined us.
I like many others are just getting more than a little fractious now given his meagre contribution during matches and paltry return in terms of goals compared with his salary!

I now read that West Ham have signed Lingard on loan for £1.5m plus his wages till the end of the season.

Surely that must have been a far better option for us now than looking to keep Benteke beyond January and extend his contract further?

With age in mind, what on earth is happening with Benteke? Out of contract in the summer, no need to call on his services for the rest of the season after yesterdays showing, yet £120k/wk costs wages. If he was sold now for £2.5m which would have to sound a steal, that would put £5m in the Palace bank. After yesterday, if Benteke is not got rid of forthwith in this window, it is clear evidence that there is not a business head at Selhurst, or that Benteke is a not wanted player anywhere.

Apparently Mainz only let him go cos they need the money (as he has 10 in 17 for relegation threatened side). With this in mind I think it's almost certain that we will buy him, just that maybe we'll start him for 15th time early next season rather than this side of summer break.

Could this be the reason for his omission y/day?

Seems, we ARE willing to let him leave(finally).

Sounds like a loan deal till the end of the season. That doesn't mean we won't give him an extension when the loan is over. Hope that's NOT the case but I suspect the club will want to see if Mateta is going to be our future before burning our boats.
