US Supreme Court Draft document leaked. Interesting times, abortion is a fault line in US politics and no doubt when the decision is rendered there will be lots of discussion about it on here. For today I am more interested in the leaking of the document. Apparently the SC has always been very good at keeping it's deliberations quiet until they were ready so this is the first time a leak has happened. If it turns out it was one of the judges all hell will let lose As until now the judges have always been respectful of each other.

The politicisation of their highest court now seems complete. There is a little hope still, as Chief Justice Roberts still seems capable of separating himself from political pressure and deciding things on the law alone. If true, then the pressure to appoint more Justices with a less conservative approach will become intense prior to the mid-terms, when securing approval of them would likely become more difficult. If the Republicans win in 2024 then we could be in a spiral of ever more appointments to pack the Court with people who are expected to vote the "right" way. What a poor system!

Yes, the court is highly politicised....all the institutions are...the left can hardly complain because they have been stuffing their ideology into institutions anyway they can for many decades....we only have to look at teaching and media. I'm obviously anti abortion in most circumstances. However, if the court abolish Roe v Wade....and until that's confirmed we don't really know...but if they do I see the left lying about it in much the same way they lied about the Florida bill that they termed the 'don't say gay' bill. They will claim the court are making abortion illegal when in reality the judgement will throw abortion limits back to the states......So while red states might change laws it wouldn't affect the blue states.....who will continue to kill the unborn to their heart's content.

It's nothing new this has always happened, what do you expect when a political President appoints a judge. The left are upset now but they weren't complaining during the sixties and seventies. If they want to re-balance the SC all they need to do is keep winning the presidential elections eventually they will get their way.

This is a direct consequence of the Donald Trump presidency. He vowed to appoint only Supreme Court justices who wanted to end abortion rights. Three of the five justices who make up the conservative majority on the court were put there by Trump. A woman's right to choose is fundamental surely.

Yup however it is the President that gets to appoint the SC and as he is political what do you expect. Its a flawed system that both sides will complain has been abused by the other lot. Perhaps it's greatest strength is that a judge cannot be sacked and so in theory is immune to policial pressure. Edited by Badger11 (03 May 2022 4.25pm)
