One day, people in this country will realise why gun rights were written into the US constitution
and it's not much to do with protecting your property. The most powerful people in the world simply love guns and for good reason.

The US did not have a standing army and after the war of independence were flat broke. The possibility of the English trying again to take back the colonies probably by invading from Canada was uppermost in their minds.

As the army had been mostly disbanded the cheapest way to protect the country from invaders and native American tribes was to form a militia (part time unpaid soldiers under military leadership).

That was the original reason for the right to bear arms. Since then it is true that the original reason has been twisted out of all sense of proportion to mean anyone can carry a gun.

Ffs young kids how f***ed up is America ? Whatever party is in power, they cannot keep bowing to the gun lobby.
Those poor kids and their families. Also we should not forget the other kids who witnessed it

RIP

What are they going to do then? Take their guns off of them?

Do you seriously think that republicans are going to vote for the state to take their arms?

The level of distrust and polarisation in the states is way way past this point. You have more chance of a dead Dodo becoming president.

Probably better to have a couple of armed teachers in the school. Why this isn't standard practice after previous events is surprising.

Why shouldn't any law abiding citizen have the right to own a gun?

Agree with logic but the whole thing really is so bemusing.

I still stand aghast at the fact that just about anyone can go in to what is virtually their, I don't know, Sainsburys/Argos and just buy a f**king assault rifle. Isn't Walmart still the biggest gun retailer?

You have to ask at what stage is somebody going to go 'Hang on a jif, maybe the answer to gun violence isn't more guns'??

It's so unbelievably tragic, certainly beyond my articulation, for something like this to happen.

Why would anybody need a gun? Oh yes, because other people have guns. Well let's just all have guns and that will sort the law abiding from the non-law abiding, you know, once we've cleaned up all the dead bodies.

Also, out of interest, people aren't categorically either 'law abiding' or 'non-law abiding'. The world doesn't work like that. Even if it did how would you determine that?

Nonsense.

How about a tank or missle launcher or a nuclear weapon or anthrax?

If you were starting from scratch with a cohesive state you obviously wouldn't want it.

America just isn't that country and if anything arms ownership will continue to rise in line with polarisation.

Rather amusingly all the politicians who want arms control have armed escorts.....so as you'd expect, it's about others giving up their arms before they do.

Gun ownership is hard to understand but it's even harder to see why they need armour piercing bullets to hunt deer or semi-automatic rifles which can quite easily be converted to fully automatic; there are YouTube videos on how to convert your AK-47.
If you need a machine gun for home defence then moving is a better option.
