Justice Clarence Thomas, in his opinion, wrote: "In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court's substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell" - referencing three landmark decisions of the past on the right to contraception, the repeal of anti-sodomy laws, and the legalisation of same-sex marriage respectively.

If those all happen, then I will think I will self-combust with joy!

On a serious note, suspect that something will happen to prevent this (I would not rule out an assassination of a SC judge by way of giving Biden the chance to rig it in favour of the s***-libs) but the Genie is out of the bottle now.

And we are one step nearer to the US breaking up. There is simply no way back from this now.

The Right have seen that things can be reversed and the Left are in meltdown over their shibboleths are under direct assault. There is no middle ground.

I'll be honest, even I baulk a tad at the blanket ban on abortion being touted in some States, feeling that its a horrendous procedure but better to be (far more strictly mind) legislated than driven underground but the divide is now so strictly entrenched that I will back it based purely on the basis that it annoys those I despise.

Willing to put my hands up to having become like this over the last decade, with it speeding up since Brexit and the disgusting attempts to render my 'Leave' vote null and void, but I just cannot see a way back to any kind of middle ground now. And can acknowledge that as a stance that will probably not end well.

Hard to reconcile the sanctity of life argument with their gun laws too.

I think the break-up of the USA, in some senses, would be plausible if Biden were to remain President for around 4 terms (yes , i know there's a restriction to a maximum of 2, and Biden won't be around for much longer in any event) There is a huge vacuum in leadership, not just due to sleepy-joe, but the fractured set-up of American politics. I could see States with differing laws causing some kind of mass migratory situation where people re-settle according to their destination State values.
It probably won't get to that, as the gap in the political market is filled by a strong Trump-esque leader who grabs control, sating the majority and marginalising the minority groups further.
But isn't that how Nazi Germany started ?

The inter-state migration thing is already happening. Texas for example is the fast-growing US state in terms of population whilst California is in decline.

The dramatic increase in crime in many Democrat-controlled cities continues apace but its rarely discussed and the reality is that most people who were going to get out of places such as Chicago have done so.

The division grows ever deeper and the disconnect between politicians (from all sides to be fair-the Righ are certainly not immune to this) and the people they claim to represent increases.

Let's be honest, neither side is willing to concede an inch at the moment and I cannot see that getting any better for a long, long time. Suspect that this summer should be fine but come October when those gas price hikes start feeding through, and ouch. The potential to get very messy. Not just in the US but potentially even more so in Europe (places like Germany are potentially facing a crisis that could go anywhere).

I agree about the visible leadership of the West being beyond pathetic but its those behind them that I worry about because I suspect they have definitive agendas in mind, none of which work out very well for me and mine.

Politics in countries that have elections, operated under the principle of division (particularly of left and right). There was a general sway back and forth, which kept the electorate bubbling away with periods of dissatisfaction which could facilitate a change of Government. And repeat.

One perspective, is that the electorate are being fractured further into sub-groupings which it becomes impossible for either Government or opposition to completely satisfy. Coalition Governments have been the answer for some European countries, at least in the short term. Not possible in the US of A.

It's going to be interesting to see how the internal politics plays out, but Foreign Policy may have much more of an influence on home politics, (as Matov alludes to) with potential shortages of supplies (food and fuel) , or at least a significant rise in inflation/costs of living.,..if not WW3

Lots of women shrieking online saying that it'll happen here next (ie the outlawing of abortion). Err...no it won't. Perhaps concentrate your hysteria on numerous other countries where abortion is at present either illegal or severely restricted.

Malta & other EU countries as an example.

Just a reminder of the sheer hypocrisy and double standards that are the norm for political life.

I can't ever see it myself. For all our faults, we're no America. And outside of fringe types and time rich online ideological hobbyists types of left and right, we rarely go to the lengths they do. We're more of a rub along culture. Someone once said that Americans need more hope than we do. I think that's about right, they're all looking to some perfect reality that reflects their worldview, whereas here we're more concerned with the day to day, are more apathetic and cynical.

Since three of these Justices were put in place under Trump, in my view he will get bragging rights for this ruling taking place. Having that on his GOP credentials makes it significianty more likely that a fair chunk of Republican voters will be wedded to him having a second term. To my mind either that will happen, or he will be the spanner in the works in 2024 for Republicans. He's not going to be playing second fiddle to anyone else. With Trump it's always all or nothing.

I can remember right back to primary school (to 1970) when we kids would say things like: "Americans are all mad". How silly we were....

Maybe the heat gets to those European genes.

The Mexicans should be use to it but that country's just a big drug cartel with spicy food.....surprised that Oasis didn't do more tours there.
