What's that supposed to prove? That a right leaning editor believes that social media businesses constrain free speech? Hardly newsworthy, is it? The right have been bleating the same old baa baa for years. It isn't true. They are private businesses, who can decide for themselves what their moderation policy is, and in turn where they get their advertising revenue. Platforms exist for all views. Trying looking on Gab for socialist views, let alone trying to post anything that doesn't conform with their community standards.

There are great dangers online from misinformation and the involvement of foreign countries who wish us harm. We are constantly under attack in a cyber war. Listen to, or read, what the head of GCHQ had to say about this only today. He was the guest editor on the Today programme on Radio 4. It was chilling to hear what's going on.

That's real. That needs action. The idea that the social media companies are restricting free speech is a total misunderstanding of what is really happening.

It's not supposed to "prove" anything. Just give examples.

I certainly don't. Most don't really know what is going on in any instance. They all probably think the booths are for a Punch and Judy performance, they will expect a show, so on and so forth. It's just setting everything up for disaster.

Furthermore, I don't think the upper or middle classes should have a vote, nor women, not those with disabilities, nor anyone from a minority ethnic background. Just white men, but not all whites, just English protestant men... aged 30-60. In fact, not even them, no votes for anybody. Ah, politics.

Universal suffrage is not the best method of electing people, existence does not make someone qualified to influence

I've changed my mind I'm not going to put in the work collecting together the stuff just to give WE an opportunity to go on one of his denial of reality rants.

You could write it for him. It's the bias of the sources, it's the supposed private company (that's essentially an arm of the Democrats and not independent). It's security services doing their job when they are interfering in elections. He has literally no shame and the lies drip like rain.

What a surprise!!! What you really mean is you know that any “example“ you put forward will be swiftly dismissed because none have any merit at all.

This was all a publicity stunt by Musk to try to drive traffic back to Twitter after his stupidity had driven it away. All it has done is given the conspiracy theorists some red meat to chew on. It’s very sad to see anyone in the UK being duped by this nonsense.

If Twitter wants to support the Democrats (they don’t) then they can. That’s their right. In fact an independent analysis found there was more moderation of Democratic content than Republican. Not that you would believe it. Their purpose is to make money for their shareholders, just like any business. That means giving their users what they want so that advertisers spend money with them. It’s not complicat ed.

The security services don’t interfere in elections. They protect elections. That most of the protection that’s been needed has recently involved the right is only because that’s where the threats come from. Surely with Trump’s activities that’s obvious!

A good deal of the froth that was generated over this concerns the so called “laptop” story. If you haven’t already done so I seriously suggest you listen to the episode of the “Perfect Storm” podcast which deals with this. The guy that worked for Steve Bannon on the laptop and gave the copy to Giuliani speaks openly about their intentions. He laughs and jokes about the outcome and how he edited it. There is only one authentic copy and that’s on the original laptop which is in the hands of the FBI. All the “copies” aren’t true copies. They have been edited. Exactly how is unknown but when you know what the intended outcome was you can make an informed guess. For sure much is real and incriminating but that’s not the point. It’s what might have been removed, reordered or otherwise tampered with that matters.

That being so, and with the FBI”s warnings of a new misinformation dump about to happen, it’s hardly surprising that social media companies were reticent in allowing this story to gain traction.

There seems to be a belief that Musk has done all this deliberately for some obscure political objectives. It doesn’t make sense to me as he is driving people away from Twitter, losing good people and undermining Tesla at the same time.

Time alone will tell.

You can't 'dismiss' anything. You're just a dishonest narcissistic waffle merchant wasting people's time on the Internet with his opinions. You make claims that you don't back up and then ask others to provide evidence.

No, you made the claims, it should be you who backs them up. Instead you write nothing but opinion.

There's no point providing Twitter file documentation to you because you're not an honest actor. Whenever people show evidence you just obfuscate and dismiss and then, like here, claim what you said amounts to something. You're just a modern day regime propagandist.

If I decide to post the Twitter files revelations it'll be because I'm interested in doing it. It won't be in a reply to a malignant entity like yourself.

You aren’t providing it to me! I already have enough to have reached my conclusions. You are providing it to try to justify your claims. That you refuse therefore confirms what I believe. That nothing you would be able to provide is.not already known and is already debunked. The door is open to prove me wrong, but I predict that you will trawl up another excuse not to even try to.

The rest is just the standard ad hominem response you resort to when you have lost an argument but are not man enough to admit it.

What is happening over choosing the next Speaker of the House?

It seems that the battle for control of the GOP has now broken out into open warfare, the consequences of which will be very interesting.

How it will be resolved in the short term is less interesting than the long term implications. I foresee two possible outcomes. Either enough Democrats will vote for . McCarthy or they will themselves nominate one of the never Trump Republicans. Pity Liz Cheney isn’t there now. She would have been a shoe in.

Hopefully it’s another nail in the coffin of Trumpism and signals the eventual return of a once great party to the realms of reality.

2 years of chaos looks certain, which is all good for the Democrats who can just watch their opponents do the job for them.

Many of those opposing McCarthy are from the fringe of the party. I would think they are doing this to gain consessions but you're right that this is an unusual thing to happen. Both parties have these problems at times and it shows how fragile a narrow majority can be.

To be honest, the obsession with taking down Trump could be more harm to the democrats, come the election. Realistically Ron DeSantis looks likely for 2024, and if Trump feels that he hasn't got a chance he likely won't run, either within the GOP or as an independent. Since realistically I very much doubt he can win at this stage, from the perspective of the democrats it would be better if he did still run.

Despite there being a widespread belief on the right in the USA, which is shared by the usual.crew on here, that the Democrats are responsible for the various legal messes Trump is embroiled in, I don’t think it’s true, for exactly the reason you identify.

I think it is simply the slow grind of justice working it’s way through due process to inevitable conclusions. The Democrats might like to stop it and let him fade away rather than remain as a martyred hero but it’s not theirs to determine.

I would agree that January 6th and what led up to it is something that enough people concur with regardless of the legalities, that Trump likely isn't going to win an election. So really my primary point is that from dems perspcctive it would therefore be useful for him to be in a position to run.

Conversely for the GOP he would be a real spanner in the works. My hunch is that they will try to bring him onside in some way, and persuade him not to go nuclear if he realises that Trump 2024 isn't going to happen. That way Desantis has a clear path to the nomination against Biden, and in that match up stands a decent chance of winning in my view.
