where do you start after last night fiasco? Antonio was unlucky not to claim a hat trick and he didn't score! Goalie - 3 goals scored inside the 6 yard box. Defence - Cahill and Kouyate don't look the best combination. Often too bigger gap between them - not a one off, Liverpool exploited this hugely. Centre mid - 2 young defensive midfielders completely dominated last night against static Luka and trier Macca. When 1 went the other stayed, exactly as a midfield should operate. Their energy and desire to get forward shows that it can be done. Set pieces - Soucek is good at set pieces. We know that. Who marked him yesterday? I think it was Ward. Wings - Townsend has gone and Eze flatters to deceive at times. He needs to influence the game more. I would drop the former and persevere with the latter though Forward - typical performance really. Wilf good at times, not good for periods. Got angry and was lucky not to be booked, and seems surprised when he gets tackled. Struggled to beat their right back for the 2nd time this season. Tekkers pretty awful really, did he win a header all night? Early season when we defended it was 2 blocks of 4, now we look a shambles. Roy needs to go back to basics asap.

The thing is there just isn’t any passion, when a goal is conceded it’s like ‘oh well’ . It is dispiriting as a fan / supporter to watch as the attitude is so passive and the lack of not being willing to bust a gut to stop a cross or win a header or make a defensive tackle is annoying. A team tends to mirror the managers attitude/personality. Roy is his age and he is not the kind of character who has fight and spunk and will engage in the dark arts. His team resembles his character. We need zest and energy in the centre of midfield as many has said over a long time. I hope we can get someone in before deadline day just to give us a little more for the remainder of the season.

Sadly we seem to be progressing from bad to worse each time we play these days one win in 10 games is sadly relegation form and at this rate if( a big if!) Fulham win the two games they have in hand over us then that would put them only 4 points behind us and the reality of our situation will be laid bare. Goodness knows why a solid defence has become so leaky these days, to a man each of our defenders last night were torn apart by the opposition, we conceded from two set pieces and a header all of which should have been cleared. Their slowness due to age is of course one problem but they also seem to lack any leadership on the park, if you watch Rice he is directing all the time telling team colleagues where they should be. Mitchell was also very disappointing last night his positioning was bad and I really do worry for him because I do not think he is fast enough or big enough to be a succesful defender in the PL. The midfield, is not creative enough, the passing from midfield mostly ends up with the opposition and therefore any link with forwards is mostly lost in any attacking phase of the game. Our best striker this season is not a striker (Zaha) and our so called strikers are either always injured or not what the purport to be. Why Roy continues to put Benteke in the starting line up God only knows?, IMHO it's like starting a game with 10 men against 11, Benteke has no vision or anticipation in his game, he is lazy,as demonstrated last night when early on in the game, Eze put a fantastic ball in to the 6 yard box, it was low and fast only required an alert striker to put a foot on it and we would have had our second goal instead Benteke was jogging along watching the ball from what would have been a good position to attack the ball had he possessed the necessary vision and anticipation. I personally, would be more than happy for to him go this window to WBA and BFS so he can help relegate them rather than us!

Batman will get the odd goal, but he is simply not up to it as a PL player. Running around, no awareness of offside etc. He is a premier league quality striker FFS what is it with you people none of the strikers we have had have played well for us under hodgson despite banging in goals everywhere else its not the premier league

Benteke scored 15 goals in his first season and in 4 years or so has not got anywhere near double figures since. Batshuayi is here on loan because he is not good enough for Chelsea otherwise he would be in their starting line up!

Ok, now which of you lot writes for the Guardian? Or does the Guardian reporter just copy what appears on this thread? "Again a failure to convert a promising start* into a decent performance will reflect badly on Roy Hodgson. The need to switch things round, to try something new, was obvious after about 25 minutes**. Instead the same predictable substitutions arrived at the same predictable times, with the same predictable results. Palace are not safe, and on this evidence nor is Hodgson." * Not sure I'd put "Again" and "promising start" in the same sentence with reference to Palace. I can't remember another promising start. ** Well before that.

There are problems in all areas of the team. Cahill was badly at fault on the first goal he was too far away from the play on the right and left a gap for Antonio to run into. Both centre backs were too blame for the second. Cahill looks out of form and has been poor on his return from injury. Where is Tomkins his our best centre back? McArthur is excellent in midfield and covers every blade of grass but Milivojevic is not contributing much. We need a ball player who can hold the ball like Cabaye who has not been replaced. Beneteke improvement has fizzled out and shouldn’t start. Wilf is effective in the centre but better on the wing. Eze could be given central striker role as a poacher with Bats providing the pace with Wilf. I like Ayew because he works hard but he is not quick or good enough as a striker and the wing is not his position. Townsend should be able to cut it but he was poor last night. We’re missing Schlupp who is better on the wing. I agree we miss a player like Cabaye greatly but don’t forget he fitted into a 3 central midfield role which protected the back four. Now we have 2 in the middle of midfield who are much older now and failing miserably. Back four needs protecting more now than that back four when Cabaye was playing for us. I remember us fans moaning then that our forward play was poor even then?

I saw that, and not only was he merely jogging into the box he appeared to be hiding behind the last defender, so was never going to get the ball. How hard is it to make a run into the box in the hope that the cross might reach him - it's not like we put loads of crosses in, he might only need to make that run 3 or 4 times during a game.
